This panel session reports on a professional development workshop series to prepare librarians to assume a more engaged role in the university. The goal of the program is to re-examine the librarian’s role, focusing on the liaison role as the unifying agent to cultivate engagement with users through the teaching-learning process. Attendees will complete sample activities from the workshops and will learn how this model might be adapted to their own institutional setting.

A mobile librarian service to the Wayne State University College of Nursing was developed to provide in-person reference and research support. This service has been successfully used for eight semesters by College of Nursing faculty, graduate students, and some undergraduates for support of research and course work. Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners. The Education Library at Wayne State University has a long and storied history. From its beginning at the Detroit Normal School to its final merger with the general library, the Education Library has been at the heart of not only Wayne State University, but also in the development of the College of Education. This paper chronicles the history of the library, and the people who created it, from its very beginning to its final place among the volumes of the Purdy/Kresge Library.

At research universities, the library plays a critical role in meeting the information needs of researchers. As libraries expand their electronic resources, researchers are less likely to visit the library and may be unaware of available services and resources. In addition, not all research team members are reached during traditional library orientation sessions.
