No faculty lines were open when I graduated with my MLS at the library where I was employed as a staff member, but I was able to take advantage of organizational restructuring to obtain a management position over interlibrary loan. My department head at the time was assigned with providing copyright assistance. I seized the opportunity to learn more while I searched for a position that required my degree. Balancing Informed Evaluation With Efficiency: Applying Copyright And Licensing Evaluation To Reserves And Interlibrary Loan, Leetta Schmidt

This article examines steps taken at one academic library to address issues encountered when attempting to create a foundation of copyright knowledge to assist staff in reserves and interlibrary loan. It reviews the development of a copyright policy for the library that specifically addressed interlibrary loan and reserves activities. It also addresses how conducting staff instruction, developing process documentation, and having regular training meetings, enhanced each department’s ability to incorporate the new policy into daily workflows. Finally, it points out new issues encountered when attempting to simplify how copyright and licensed materials are handled.

Decades-old innovation in course reserves supply has turned into cumbersome and duplicated processes. The need to improve services at the University of South Florida was augmented by changing platforms and systems university-wide. Service enhancements are often bombarded with unforeseen obstacles. By building in a little flexibility into course reserves service, one university was able to deal with year after year of system migrations.

Libraries try several ways of meeting patron expectations. Providing on-demand streaming video content for course reserves remains a formidable challenge. Multitudinous methods for acquiring and accessing content hamper the flexibility of any such service. This article reviews what one library has done to make streaming media, especially streaming video, available to faculty in the collection and how this foundation will be used to support electronic reserves service in the future.
