Copyright Instruction In Lis Programs: Report Of A Survey Of Standards In The U.S.A., Leetta M. Schmidt, Michael C. English

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

This article will detail the results of a survey distributed within the United States of America to professionals working in academic, public, school/media, and special libraries that asked respondents to rate their daily copyright and intellectual property knowledge needs vs. their actual knowledge and education in this area. The results were then compared with an analysis of course content in current ALA accredited LIS programs in the U.S. gathered from online course descriptions to determine whether there is evidence pointing to a need to alter the curriculum of LIS programs to better prepare graduates for the copyright and intellectual property …

Services And Resources To Engineers: A Case Study Of Outreach And Marketing, Assessment, And Future Directions In A Research Library, Matt Torrence

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

The literature, activities, and resource needs of engineering students and faculty provide insight into a demographic that is often among the early-adopters of new technologies, tools, and methods of sharing information. Despite the often non-bibliographic nature of their research efforts, there are numerous elements of the traditional service model that remain relevant and integral to the engineering research patron base. New methods of in-person and virtual instruction, the improved promotion of research consultation, and data management are prime targets for efficient and effective service updates. This article outlines the current engineering research environment, using a large research institution as a …

Biocuration has become a cornerstone for analyses in biology, and to meet needs, the amount of annotations has considerably grown in recent years. However, the reliability of these annotations varies; it has thus become necessary to be able to assess the confidence in annotations. Although several resources already provide confidence information about the annotations that they produce, a standard way of providing such information has yet to be defined. This lack of standardization undermines the propagation of knowledge across resources, as well as the credibility of results from high-throughput analyses. Seeded at a workshop during the Biocuration 2012 conference, a …

No One Left-Behind! Teaching Information Literacy In A Different Way To An Urban Population, Kiersten Cox, Vicki L. Gregory, Julius Fleschner

School of Information Faculty Publications

The demographics of student-athletes at the University of South Florida closely resemble that of many urban areas in the USA. These students often have little academic success. The School of Information pioneered a credit bearing information literacy course specifically for student-athletes to increase their academic success and to improve their information literacy. The article describes five strategies that make this class successful. These strategies can employed in this class can be employed in other setting such as an urban library or other institution interested in improving clients information literacy.

Copyright And Lis Programs: Is It Time For A Formal Introduction?, Leetta M. Schmidt, Michael C. English Jan 2015

Copyright And Lis Programs: Is It Time For A Formal Introduction?, Leetta M. Schmidt, Michael C. English

Academic Services Faculty and Staff Publications

Demands on libraries and librarians routinely change, but the curriculum of many Masters of Library Science programs do not necessarily keep pace. An analysis of course content in current LIS programs gathered from online course descriptions revealed that none of the 50 ALA-accredited MLS programs in the United States have a required course dedicated to copyright / intellectual property and only 10 have an elective dedicated to these subjects. This presentation will detail the results of a survey distributed nationally to professionals working in academic, public, school/media, and special libraries that asked respondents to rate their daily copyright and intellectual …
