Ron Brackett, a news director at the St. Petersburg Times, solicited letters to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II. This collection includes submissions to the newspaper. Some of the materials in this collection appeared in a commemorative section published by the St. Petersburg Times.

In April 1994, the St. Petersburg Times asked interested readers to submit their recollections of the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War Il. The Times compiled the submissions and published a special section in the May 25, 1994 paper to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1944). The newspaper donated some of the letters, journal entries, and clippings used in the D-Day Remembered section to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library in August 1994.

In mid-1991 the St. Petersburg Times asked interested readers to submit their reminiscences of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America's official entry into World War II. On December 4, 1991, the Times published a commemorative section which included many of these submissions. Three days later, Americans somberly observed the fiftieth anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After publishing this special section, the Times donated this collection to Nelson Poynter Memorial Library for present and future scholarship.
