In September 2003, Gabriel Cazares—former mayor of Clearwater and member of the Pinellas County commission—donated personal archives related to his service as a member of the Florida State Commission on Hispanic Affairs and his general leadership on Hispanic issues. A native of Alpine, Texas, Gabriel Cazares was born on 31 January 1920. He enlisted in the California National Guard in 1938, and entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1941. He served in the European theatre of operations during the Second World War, and later participated in the Berlin Airlift, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. This collection …

On 15 November 2004, Guy Greene donated an abstract of title prepared by St. Petersburg’s West Coast Title Company. The contents include typewritten copies of deeds, contracts, mortgages, liens, judgments, and other such items compiled from the public records of the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties through 12 July 1957. (Prior to 1912, Pinellas was part of Hillsborough County.) Early records include real estate agreements transferring land from the State of Florida to Hamilton Disston, a Philadelphia capitalist who acquired four million acres of Florida land in the early 1880s for $1,000,000. Sandy Oestreich and May Hainisch, two longstanding members of the Pinellas County Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), donated a variety of research and subject files from their leadership of the Pinellas NOW chapter. The general organizational records, advocacy files, and program files illustrate the local NOW chapter’s involvement in a variety of issues, including advocacy for reproductive rights and criminal justice reform, preventing sexual harassment and violence towards women, and supporting the passage of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment between 1973 and 2004. This collection of campaign pins and bumper stickers, donated in September 2004 by Aurora “Lel” Kellman, includes items from many political campaigns. Most of these materials support candidates or platforms sponsored by the Democratic Party, although some do support third-party candidates (such as Ralph Nader of the Green Party in the 2000 presidential election).

Dr. Jean Chance, a retired professor of journalism, joined the faculty of the University of Florida (UF) in 1969. During the late 1980s, while serving as an associate professor in the UF College of Journalism and Communications, Chance received a sabbatical to research Henrietta Poynter’s influence and leadership at the St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly. This collection includes research files, notes, and photocopied documents collected by Chance during her sabbatical, as well as a paper delivered at the 1989 meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC). Suzanne Davis Hardee (1922-2004), a longtime resident of Fernandina Beach in Nassau County, collected a variety of titles related to Florida history, literature, and culture. Kathleen Hardee Arsenault, her daughter and former dean of the Poynter Library, donated these monographs in 2004. All titles are searchable through the library catalog. The attached document provides a directory of titles in the collection as a single file.
