Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn Sep 2015

Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS) (2012), the library profession has seen a 48% (19,458) increase in males working in libraries since 1980 and the male influx is expected to increase (Minnesota, 2011) despite lingering professional stereotypes. Movies, books, and other popular media focus on the overall image of the librarian, as if only one type exists for both sexes (Duke, 1999; Garcia, 2011). These stereotypes may be misinterpreted on the faulty premise that men confront the same stereotypes in the library workplace as women. Social roles and norms are different for men and women and …

Factors That Influence Male Millennials To Become Professional Librarians, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

This case study investigates what prompts male Millennials to join the historically stereotyped feminized library profession. The study addresses social, cultural, economic, and/or political factors that influence male Millennials to become professional librarians; the influence of technology on male Millennials currently enrolled in library and information science (LIS) graduate programs decisions to become professional librarians; and professional stereotypes male Millennials currently enrolled in LIS graduate programs encounter. To gather data, surveys were conducted with 231 participants enrolled in 37 LIS graduate programs across the United States, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 volunteers who participated in the surveys. Rethinking An Established Information Literacy Program: How Leveraging Assessment Data Can Improve Teaching And Promote Change, Katie Bishop, Eleanor Johnson

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Over the past two decades academic librarians have been exploring the use of assessment to communicate and demonstrate to campus stakeholders the importance of libraries and librarians when it comes to student learning.1 This has not been an easy road. While faculty and librarians are often in agreement that students need certain information literacy skills, they often disagree as to how students should learn these skills and which ones are most important.2 Some of this disconnect may be due to faculty and librarians not speaking the same language when it comes to information literacy.3 Another difference may be that faculty …

Crowdsourcing Digital Public History, Jason A. Heppler, Gabriel K. Wolfenstein Mar 2015

Crowdsourcing Digital Public History, Jason A. Heppler, Gabriel K. Wolfenstein

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The generation of communal knowledge is not a new phenomenon. In the late nineteenth century, the Oxford English Dictionary solicited volunteers to submit words and their usage for inclusion in the dictionary ( 1 ). Carl Becker, writing in 1932 on what was already an old discussion in the historical profession, noted that "if the essence of history is the memory of things said and done, then it is obvious that every normal person, Mr. Everyman, knows some history" (2). The historian Jo Guldi's work on participatory mapping shows that urban planners in the middle of the twentieth century attempted …

Ala Midwinter 2015 Lita Preconference Review: How User Testing Can Improve The User Experience Of Your Library Website, Tammi M. Owens

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Last July, Winona State University’s Darrell W. Krueger Library rolled out a completely new website. This January we added to that new user experience by upgrading to LibGuides and LibAnswers v2. Now, we’re looking for continuous improvement through continuous user experience (UX) testing. Although I have some knowledge of the history and general tenets of user experience and website design, I signed up for this LITA pre-conference to dive into some case studies and ask specific questions of UX specialists. I hoped to come away with a concrete plan or framework for UX testing at our library. Specifically, I wanted …

Factors Influencing Male Millennials To Become Professional Librarians, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This case study investigates factors influencing Millennial men to become professional librarians. A grounded theory study was conducted using Kanter’s theory of “tokenism” to frame an investigation of factors influencing men’s decisions to enroll in library and information science graduate programs. The central framework investigates how tokenism explains the presence of Millennial males currently enrolled in library and information science graduate programs with the goal to become professional librarians.

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Wyoming Scholar’s Repository (WySR), is an initiative by the University of Wyoming Libraries to support our scholars and provide a Green Open Access solution. WySR (http://repository.uwyo.edu/) disseminates a wide variety of scholarship, including faculty papers, student scholarship, conference proceedings, and journals.
