Umass Amherst Friends Of The Library Newsletter - Spring/Summer 2008 (No. 35), Jay Schafer

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries

Message from Jay:

Anticipating the campus ten-year New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) institutional reaccreditationprocess in 2009 (originally scheduled for 2008 but postponed for a year due to campus circumstances), UMass AmherstLibraries initiated a “self-study” process to assess our progress since the 1997 review. The final Self Study Report included the usual documentation of goals, accomplishments, and statistical comparisons. Unique to our Report were two exceptional vision statements created in a collaborative process by Library staff – “Focusing on Undergraduates” and“Serving the Graduate and Research Mission.” In December 2007, a team of four distinguished library professionals visited the …

Connecting 24/5 To Millennials: Providing Academic Support Services From A Learning Commons, Anne C. Moore, Kimberly Wells Jun 2008

Connecting 24/5 To Millennials: Providing Academic Support Services From A Learning Commons, Anne C. Moore, Kimberly Wells

University Libraries Publication Series

In response to the seamless academic and personal behavior of Millennial college students, libraries are creating a learning commons in which campus academic support services are integrated with library services to provide everything students need to succeed in a single facility 24 hours a day with food. Roving may be an effective way to satisfy the immediate support needs of students collaborating in these bustling environments. A survey conducted on March 16, 2006 of users of the UMass Amherst Learning Commons (opened in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library in September 2005) provided detailed insight into who they are, how often …

Achieving Participatory Privacy Regulation: Guidelines For Cens Urban Sensing, Katie Shilton, Jeffrey A. Burke, Deborah Estrin, Mark Hansen, Mani B. Srivastava Jun 2008

Achieving Participatory Privacy Regulation: Guidelines For Cens Urban Sensing, Katie Shilton, Jeffrey A. Burke, Deborah Estrin, Mark Hansen, Mani B. Srivastava

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

This technical report is intended to help CENS urban sensing researchers incorporate participation and respect privacy while conducting research about people. The goal is to provide a framework by which to assess an appropriate level of participation and meaningful policy and technical responses to privacy concerns. By keeping in mind the five guidelines outlined here, system developers can respond to participant needs and balance the benefits of data gathering with individual and group privacy.

The Introduction defines and describes participatory privacy regulation: the approach to privacy design taken at CENS. Sections I-V provide descriptions and planning tools for each …

“Reference Librarians At The Reference Desk In A Learning Commons: A Qualitative Evaluation.” Preprint, Elizabeth B. Fitzpatrick

Elizabeth B. Fitzpatrick

This is a preprint of an article co-written with Dr. Anne C. Moore, and Beth W. Lang, Head of Reference, W.E.B. Du Bois Library, University of Massachusetts Amherst. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s W.E.B. Du Bois Library’s Learning Commons, only Reference librarians staff the Reference & Research Assistance desk. Surveys, a focus group, reference question transcriptions, and question-type tallies indicate this service model is strongly preferred by users and librarians over the previous tiered model.

Participatory Privacy In Urban Sensing, Katie Shilton, Jeffrey A. Burke, Deborah Estrin, Mark Hansen, Mani B. Srivastava Apr 2008

Participatory Privacy In Urban Sensing, Katie Shilton, Jeffrey A. Burke, Deborah Estrin, Mark Hansen, Mani B. Srivastava

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

Urban sensing systems that use mobile phones enable individuals and communities to collect and share data with unprecedented speed, accuracy and granularity. But employing mobile handsets as sensor nodes poses new challenges for privacy, data security, and ethics. To address these challenges, CENS is developing design principles based upon understanding privacy regulation as a participatory process. This paper briefly reviews related literature and introduces the concept of participatory privacy regulation. PPR reframes negotiations of social context as an important part of participation in sensing-supported research. It engages participants in ethical decision-making and the meaningful negotiation of personal boundaries and …
