This conference session is about the design and reception of a research lesson focusing on the importance of understanding biases that are inherent in the research and scholarly publication processes, and how students and faculty can be more intentional in their research process through inclusive language, asking questions about information, and thinking critically about research. The lesson provides foundational information about how the scholarly publishing ecosystem works and how it can (and does) exclude more diverse voices, encourages students to think more deeply about their own identities and how those identities can affect the research they do, and concludes with …

There is currently a lot of emphasis in higher education on accessibility, student success, and retention and as librarians, we know the library plays an important role in these initiatives. We have always understood how integral we are, but we still struggle with helping other areas of campus to understand our unique role and how it complements theirs. To focus our work while also connecting it more closely with other student success initiatives on campus, we have applied a framework that is under discussion for higher education in general, the "Student Ready College," to the library setting in particular. Like many libraries, at our library, we have tried for many years to racially diversify our profession. One of our librarians even made it to the Library Journal " Movers & Shakers" list for raising awareness of the library profession to students of color through presentations, videos, dinners, and icebreaking activities. But despite our intentions and past efforts, the situation has not improved significantly. Let's face it, we have all failed miserably: currently, the racial composition of librarianship, both at our library and in the librarian profession-at-large, is woefully unrepresentative of the United States’ population.
