In this case study, we cover Research Data Management (RDM) policy development at SMU, the implementation of SMU’s Research Data Repository. The outreach and engagement carried out at the launch and subsequently. We reflect on what we learnt in the process. We also did a pilot feasibility study of using Figshare as a paper repository and report on our findings.

In 2010, Singapore Management University (SMU) was just 10 years old with aspirations to keep growing and attain a global reputation. But how could the University highlight the hard work taking place in its schools and institutes? A core group of stakeholders decided that a digital repository was crucial to making the institution’s intellectual output openly discoverable in order to achieve a more globally visible profile. This case study shares SMU’s journey, as well as tips that can help other young institutions launch a digital repository and open their research and scholarship to discovery by the world.

This two-part presentation will cover the SMU institutional repository and the IRIS Publications system module. SMU launched the institutional repository in January 2010 and has grown the collections since. The IRIS Publications system module was launched in January 2016 with an integrated workflow in acquiring, organizing and disseminating faculty publications. The Library will share the road to building a successful repository, interfacing with the IRIS Publications system module, while embracing the principles of open access.

InK, the institutional repository of the Singapore Management University (SMU) was officially launched in January 2011 with 7,000 metadata records for SMU research publications, only 600 of which was full text. The Library uses a variety of strategies to increase the number of full text papers and to raise awareness about Open Access amongst the faculty. SMU’s Open Access policy was approved by the University’s Research Council and promulgated by the Vice-Provost, Research to the community a year ago. Ruth A. Pagell served as SMU’s first University Librarian from June 2005 until February 2011. During her time at SMU she led the effort to create a 21st century academic library recognised for enabling university research and teaching.
