As smartphone ownership rises, usage patterns are expanding. Libraries face an increasing demand for online content delivered in a mobile compatible format while being constrained by financial and staffing limitations. Solutions are readily available through free and low-cost products to create mobile web pages and existing design models from which to draw inspiration. Platform-specific apps can easily support the kinds of content most commonly delivered on library mobile pages: basic contact information and outbound links to the catalog, databases, and other resources. The Li Ka Shing Library at Singapore Management University (SMU) has designed a hands-on training programme to kick-start research and critical thinking skills in students taking the Academic Writing course. Academic Writing is a course that introduces students to the conventions of good essay and term paper writing, and includes a compulsory one hour library training session. For the academic year 2010-2011, over 1,000 students attended the AW library training programme. Founding University Librarian, SMU, 2005–2011
Ruth A. Pagell served as SMU’s first University Librarian from June 2005 until February 2011. During her time at SMU she led the effort to create a 21st century academic library recognised for enabling university research and teaching. She oversaw the implementation of the digital library (PYXIS) and the institutional repository (InK), and the development of the oral history site. After leaving SMU in February 2011, she moved …

High Yields From Course Guides At Li Ka Shing Library, Pin Pin Yeo

At the Li Ka Shing Library, the librarians started building course guides to support students working on their assignments. The reasons for creating course guides and examples of course guides with their usage statistics are explored. The research librarians got high returns from their course guides as shown by usage statistics and unsolicited feedback from faculty. It was a good way to embed the Library and its resources into the courses taught, to increase awareness of library resources and to keep the library visible.
