Give The Patrons What They Want -- Even If You Don't Have It Yet!, Ana Guimaraes

Ana Guimaraes

In the fall of 2012 Sturgis Library began investigating new collection development methods for serving the needs of students and faculty at Kennesaw State University (KSU), with the intent to enhance both collection and service excellence. One area targeted for improvement beginning in FY2013- 2014 was interlibrary loan service. With over 10,000 borrowing requests in FY 2011 -2012, Library Administration engaged the newly hired Collection Development Librarian and the ILL Paraprofessional to begin investigating and implementing a robust electronic book DDA (Demand Driven Acquisitions) program in conjunction with a PDA (Patron Driven Acquisitions) program. This presentation will highlight the process …

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold Sep 2013

Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold

Anna K. Gold

The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning …

The Spectrum Of Reliability: Critical Evaluation Of Sources In The New Information Universe, Jesse Vestermark Mar 2013

The Spectrum Of Reliability: Critical Evaluation Of Sources In The New Information Universe, Jesse Vestermark

Jesse Vestermark

How can we encourage young researchers to exercise critical thinking about the concepts of “ authority” and “reliability” in the new information universe? As wonderful as the internet is, the democratic and heterogeneous nature of the online world has clouded the ability of today’s students to quickly and clearly determine a given resource’s trustworthiness. This academic panel talk will demonstrate a visual, interactive and scalable classroom-based method of evaluating a myriad of resources and concepts in order to provoke thought and discussion in small settings, and poll-based participation in large ones.

Emerging Technologies: What's Around The Corner? And Why Should We Care?, Robert L. Nunez Ii

Robert L Nunez II

There are so many possibilities for what is right around the corner with technology. A number of the technologies that we take for granted now were originally called fads by many, so the begs the question "What is right around the corner and why should I care?"

Faculty Views Of Open Access And Open Data Initiatives, Deborah H. Charbonneau Jun 2012

Faculty Views Of Open Access And Open Data Initiatives, Deborah H. Charbonneau

Deborah H. Charbonneau

The National Science Foundation (NSF) now requires faculty researchers and scientists to submit a data management plan along with grant proposals. Further, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) enacted the Public Access Policy requiring peer-reviewed publications resulting from NIH funding to be submitted to PubMed Central. Yet, faculty perceptions and experiences with compliance related to these federal policies remain relatively unexplored. The aim of this study was to ascertain faculty attitudes about these policies and to also identify roles for positioning librarians as leaders on campus in supporting compliance with these initiatives, policy awareness, copyright issues, and data management practices. …

Worst Case Scenario, Julie S. George, Clay Howard Sep 2011

Worst Case Scenario, Julie S. George, Clay Howard

Julie S George

In recent years, an unsustainable economic model has emerged in many academic libraries—skyrocketing journal subscription costs coupled with diminishing materials budgets. What if vendor prices for journal subscriptions rise so fast that our budgets just can’t keep pace? Could we continue to meet the needs of our patrons if we had to cut EBSCO and other expensive aggregator databases? And for those of us charged with teaching good research skills, how would instruction change? In this interactive session we will tackle the above questions, present some open source alternatives to subscription databases, and discuss “vendor-free” information literacy instruction.

Give ‘Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development, Karen S. Fischer, Michael Wright Oct 2010

Give ‘Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development, Karen S. Fischer, Michael Wright

Karen S Fischer

It’s unorthodox: a small number of libraries nationwide are opening up their acquisitions process for e-books and letting their users make the picks. Known as patron-driven acquisition (PDA), the process involves working with a vendor to develop an e-book subject profile, and then loading MARC records for e-books matching the profile into the library’s catalog. After a certain number of uses, the library owns the e-book and the vendor deducts payment from a deposit account. There is no intervention by subject-specialist librarians or even acquisitions staff.

The University of Iowa Libraries established a PDA pilot in September 2009 which has …

Scholarly Communication And Collection Development Librarians: Getting The Conversation Started, Karen S. Fischer Nov 2008

Scholarly Communication And Collection Development Librarians: Getting The Conversation Started, Karen S. Fischer

Karen S Fischer

In many academic libraries, knowledge of the issues surrounding scholarly communication is considered a skill set required by every librarian who has contact with faculty and students. Conveying the complexities of author rights, alternative publishing models, open access, and the economics of publishing can seem daunting, so how do we to begin the conversation?

Learning about these complex issues takes time, but there are ways to facilitate the process of empowering librarians with the information they need to be knowledgeable enough to have conversations with their constituents. This presentation is tailored to librarians who have not yet gotten started on …

Peer Mentors And Writing Center Tutors: What Our Collaborations Taught Us About Serving The Sjsu Freshmen Students, Peggy Cabrera, Robert Bruce, Francis E. Howard

Francis E. Howard

The Library Outpost, a satellite office of the campus’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, seeks ways to reach out to First Year students who are new to writing research papers. One of our goals is to meet the First Year students on their own turf. Since the Peer Mentors and Writing Center tutors have peer relationships with the First year students, we want to learn how we can collaborate with them to provide services to the First year students. We surveyed the Peer Mentors and Writing Center Tutors to assess their perceptions of their own research skills, and their …
