At Cleveland State University, the library collaborates with faculty and departments on projects such as:

  • capturing and sharing conferences;
  • publishing scholarly journals; and
  • creating and disseminating open educational resources.

These endeavors have led to additional opportunities in other areas, such as working with students and with the greater Cleveland community. In this webinar, Barbara Loomis, Project Coordinator, Marsha Miles, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Theresa Nawalaniec, Sciences and Engineering Librarian, at Cleveland State’s Michael Schwartz Library will discuss their work with faculty and departments and the other projects that these have often led to.

The research librarians decided to assess the consultations in large part to decipher why it has grown so significantly, and to ensure that the service remains high quality in the face of growth.

E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

This study explores academic libraries’ potential uses of the mobile application Yik Yak, with particular focus on patrons’ anonymous feedback about library services and spaces. Over a 232-day period, the authors observed the Yik Yak feed for their university and recorded all yaks related to the library. Studies supporting a theory known as the Serial Position Effect indicate that learners tend to recall those items in a presentation which are ordered either first (primacy) or last (recency). Librarians may cover several topics in a one-shot instruction session, but will perhaps place special emphasis on a single topic. When we think of voices in the library, we have tended to think of them as disruptive, something to control and manage for the sake of the total library environment. The stereotype of the shushing librarian pervades public perception, creating expectations about the kinds of spaces libraries want to create. Voices are not always disruptive, however. The adoption of resource discovery platforms has been a growing trend in libraries. However, few libraries have reported on the transition from one discovery layer to another, and only a few institutions have discussed two discovery layers available in the same institution at the same time. Bond University Library recently implemented Alma as its library management system, and with this change a new discovery platform, Primo, was implemented to supersede the existing Summon platform. This paper presents the results of a usability study undertaken at Bond University Library in the move from one discovery layer to another.

This poster will present the assessment and intervention activities of individuals at a mid-sized academic library with respect to diversity personnel initiatives. Each year, library employees complete a survey designed to gauge satisfaction and areas for improvement. Qualitative data suggest that library staff are confused about definitions of diversity and/or lack requisite buy-in and interest in initiatives that address diversity concerns. The activities and outcomes of an intervention to address these issues will be discussed.

The Southeast Florida Library and Information Network (SEFLIN) has presented the Sun Seeker Leadership Institute biennially since 1997. SEFLIN, a multitype library consortium headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, was one of the first groups to sponsor a library leadership institute held as a monthly series of events over the period of a year. One hundred library staff members from all types of libraries, large, small, public, and academic, have completed the leadership institute. Libraries have shifted from repositories of materials to centers of innovation and community-based learning. Many library services changed to accommodate the shift; some staff find this difficult and perplexing and it has led to technological wariness and resistance to change. To address this we developed a continuous in-house professional development program. We will discuss barriers and enablers to establishing a program and unintended benefits, such as reducing perceived inequalities among staff, increasing trust, and empowering staff.

The Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC) provides support for health information outreach through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM). In 2013, the OERC released the second edition of The Planning and Evaluating Health Information Projects booklets. The Health Sciences Library at Baystate Health identified an objective to use these booklets to plan and evaluate a community engagement done in collaboration with The Literacy Project, an adult literacy organization operating in Franklin County, Massachusetts.

After re-starting a collaborative partnership between the library and writing center at wright state university, the librarians and writing center staff involved wanted to compare data with other existing collaborations. With a limited amount of data available in current literature, they conducted an e-mail survey of librarians, writing center staff, and writing tutoring services staff from across the country. This survey found that the majority of participants had a writing center on campus and that around two-thirds of respondents had an existing partnership.
