The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://purr.purdue.edu) uses HUBzero to provide a free, online research data collaboration platform and data management service platform for the Purdue researcher community. Funding agencies like The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, have begun requiring that researchers describe in their grant proposals how they will manage and share the data that will be produced in their research. Purpose - This case study will discuss the creation of robust preservation functionality within PURR. The study will discuss the customization of the HUBzero platform, composition of digital preservation policies, and the creation of a novel, machine-actionable metadata model for PURR’s unique digital content. Additionally, the study will trace the implementation of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model and track PURR’s progress towards Trustworthy Digital Repository certification.

This article reports results from an empirical usability evaluation of Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central as part of the effort to develop an open access research repository and collaboration platform for human-animal bond researchers. By repurposing and altering key features of the original HUBzero system, Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative Central hosts previously published materials from related disciplines and an extensive bibliography, in addition to traditional hub materials such as tools and datasets. The HUBzero cyberinfrastructure provides a virtual research environment that includes a set of tools for web-based, scientific collaboration and a platform for publishing and using resources such as executable software, source code, images, learning modules, videos, documents, and datasets. Released as open source software in 2010, HUBzero has been implemented on a typical LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) and utilizes the Joomla! content management system.
