Purdue University Libraries, in collaboration with a research unit, recently proposed to establish a summer undergraduate research experiences (URE) program with an emphasis on data literacy that serves students with limited access to research resources, i.e. underrepresented minorities, students from rural area and community colleges, and students with disabilities. The proposed URE professional development activities related to data literacy, specially data management and data ethics, are designed and tailored to this minority serving URE program based on the recommendations synthesized using reflections from librarians who have taught in data literacy workshops in similar URE programs. Accessing, using and managing data is increasingly recognized as an important learning outcome in higher education. Approaches to data literacy have typically been informed by information literacy. New approaches to information literacy have emerged that address how information is used in the different disciplinary contexts in which people learn and work. Over the past few years, an increasing number of academic libraries have been adding or supplementing research data management support and services to their offerings. In an effort to support different stakeholders (e.g. students, library faculty and librarians, and disciplinary faculty), Purdue Libraries faculty and staff have developed several different tools and resources specifically designed for librarians and liaisons in supporting research data management. Undergraduate research has been identified as a high impact educational practice by the LEAP Report. At Purdue we support undergraduate research through various library-driven initiatives such as information literacy (IL), data literacy (DL) and scholarly communication (SC). Although these initiatives can be utilized to support undergraduate research individually, librarians are beginning to recognize a need to provide a service model that offers a more complementary/holistic approach that better utilizes the full capability of these initiatives.
