Creating A Public Space For Georeferencing Sanborn Maps: A Louisiana Case Study, Adam Cox

As institutional archives digitize their historical map collections and make them publicly available online, new methods for engaging with these materials emerge. Georeferencing the maps transforms their content from static images to dynamic map overlays, and allows for the extraction of geographic data like building footprints or place name coordinates. Many organizations have turned to crowdsourcing to georeference their large holdings, and this thesis approaches crowdsourced georeferencing from the perspective of participatory heritage, taking much inspiration from the idea of the archival commons. Archaeology in the United States has been transformed into a mainstream, practical science over the past fifty years by Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and the federal regulations imposed by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. However, this form of archaeology has been plagued with criticisms since the NHPA’s enactment including issues of access and use of data maintained by state site files. State archaeology is publicly funded yet state and federal legislation often exempts CRM data from freedom of information laws. Describes the study done to identify and describe Louisiana tribal libraries and public library services to Louisiana Native American communities. These four tribes had tribal libraries: Chitimacha, Coushatta, Tunica-Biloxi, and the United Houma Nation. Tribal library evaluation areas included collections, users, technology, funding, cultural integration, and staff demographics. The following tribes were interviewed about public library service in their parishes: Caddo Adais, Choctaw-Apache Community of Ebarb, Clifton Choctaw, Four-Winds Cherokee, Jena Band of Choctaws, and the Talimali Band of Apalache of Louisiana. A Study Of A. E. Blackmar And Brother, Music Publishers, Of New Orleans, Louisiana, And Augusta, Georgia: With A Check List Of Imprints In Louisiana Collections, Paul Richard Powell

For three decades, 1858-1888, A. E. Blackmar of New Orleans, Louisiana, was one of the leading music publishers in the South. During the Civil War he published more titles than any other Confederate music publisher, operating both from New Orleans and also from Augusta, Georgia. After the war, Blackmar engaged in a number of unsuccessful partnerships but continued to publish music until his death in 1888. He also established business in New York and San Francisco for brief periods. It was primarily as a Confederate music publisher that A. E. Blackmar made his greatest contribution to American sheet music publishing. …
