Wisconsin School For Girls Inmate Record Books: A Case Study Of Redacted Digitization, Eric Willey, Laura Farley

The Wisconsin School for Girls collection housed in the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) archives contains a variety of documents from the institution’s period of operation. Inmates who were admitted to the institution were predominately juvenile females at the time of the records’ creation; because of this, the contents of the records are protected by Wisconsin state statutes, which mandate restricted access for patrons as well as limitations on the use of the information contained within the records. Given the diversity of sizes, administrators, and archival theory, it would appear logical to think that college and university archives would vary greatly in their development, processes, collecting policies, and challenges. While there is some variation, there are more similarities in college and university archives than there are differences. This study of four state universities in Illinois examines theses similarities and differences, comparing them with the Illinois State University Archives and with best practices and standards set by the Society of American Archivists and the National Archives and Records Administration.

This conference panel discussed internship and practicum work in archival repositories. The presentation delivered by Anderson focused on training at institutional repositories and the program she developed for both ISU and regional students. As per the panel’s abstract: ”This session will generate new perspectives on the issue of internships and practicums with the intended goal of balancing the educational needs of students, the instructional requirements of archival educators, and the ethical concerns of institutions.”

Learning Style Dimensions And Professional Characteristics Of Academic Librarians, Amanda Rinehart, Jennifer Sharkey, Chad M. Kahl

Do librarians with different characteristics, such as type of work responsibilities or age, have different learning styles? The authors analyzed results from over 1,500 responses to a version of the Index of Learning Styles (ILS) questionnaire based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles model. This model consists of eight dimensions paired on four scales: Active / Reflective; Sensing / Intuitive; Visual / Verbal; and Sequential / Global. In addition to their scores on the ILS questionnaire, respondents were also asked about demographic and professional characteristics. Statistically significant differences in learning style scores were found to exist between librarians with different types …

Utilizing A Time-To-Shelf Study To Start A Conversation On Change, Sally Gibson

Over the course of nine months in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Processing (CAP) Department at Illinois State University conducted a time-to-shelf study. The original purpose was to gather benchmark data and determine the length of time needed for a book to reach the shelves. The findings uncovered the need to evaluate workflows in order to improve the department’s performance. A review of the literature and the data from the time-to-shelf study enabled the department head to start a conversation about workflow changes with the subject selectors and the CAP staff.
