Grand Valley State University Libraries has found a statistically significant positive correlation between librarian-led instruction and student retention. The libraries’ Head of Instructional Services and the university's Institutional Analysis department worked together to connect library instruction with student-level data and then analyze that data over several academic years. This presentation will outline the data collection process, analysis methods, limitations, and outcomes of a longitudinal study.

Navigating a new job can be difficult for both new and experienced librarians. How will you learn “the way we do things here”? Mentoring can play a key role in helping librarians find their way to becoming effective professionals. Grand Valley State University currently has several formal mentoring programs for new librarians, in addition to informal mentoring. Our poster will discuss GVSU’s mentoring programs and the purposes they serve—acclimating to university culture, developing position-specific skills, and successfully participating in the scholarly process. The challenge of creating information literate college students begins long before freshmen enter the university classroom. This poster details a unique collaboration between a university, a community foundation, and a public school to offer middle school information literacy workshops, using threshold concepts as a basis for its curriculum. This approach to community engagement offers ideas others may want to consider about moving collaborative information literacy initiatives beyond the campus.
