Open Access, Social Justice, And The Moral Imperative: Why Oa Publishing Matters To Wgs, Sarah P. Appedu

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Students in the discipline of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are uniquely positioned to critically engage with systems of power and apply academic theory to real world practice as a field that has a clear and implicit social justice angle to its scholarship. The Open Access movement can benefit from the critical theories used in WGS as a means of ensuring maximum inclusivity of the movement. Further, WGS students must acknowledge their privileged position within an academic institution and publish in ways that undermine the systems of power that lock up knowledge behind a toll in order to align their …

Foreword by Professor Suzanne J. Flynn

I have taught the first-year seminar, Shakespeare’s Sisters, several times, and over the years I have brought the seminar’s students to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. There, the wonderful librarians have treated the students to a special exhibit of early women’s manuscripts and first editions, beginning with letters written by Elizabeth I and proceeding through important works by seventeen and eighteenth-century women authors such as Aemelia Lanyer, Anne Finch, Aphra Behn, and Mary Wollstonecraft. This year I worked with Carolyn Sautter, the Director of Special Collections and College Archives, to give my …

Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. We hope to inspire students and the rest of our community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read; or watch a memorable film.

With the 2018 collection, 102 employees offer 178 recommendations of favorite books, films, and television programs. These selections touch on everything from politics to romance.

We include several special features this year. Two of our regular columnists return once again: James Udden with his latest recommendations for the best film and TV, and …

Piloting Faculty Oer Grant Programs - A Practical Guide For Librarians, Christopher Barnes

All Musselman Library Staff Works

This community resource was created as a component of my capstone project for the 2017-2018 pilot of the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program. My goal was to determine whether my institution was ready for a faculty OER grant program pilot and design one that would be both effective and sustainable. Over the course of the project, I found myself compiling the most important questions we at Gettysburg College needed to answer to determine whether and what kind of a grant program was best for us.

Part One of this resource is therefore an organized list of the questions I found …

Becoming Part Of The Conversation Through Assessment Of Undergraduate Library Internships, Clinton K. Baugess, Kathryn Martin

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Any recent attendee at an academic library conference would likely note the large number of panels, posters, presentations, and roundtables that focus on libraries partnering and collaborating with other campus stakeholders, such as admissions, international student services, the writing center, and so on. Our library is no different.

Gettysburg College is a four-year liberal arts institution located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with an enrollment of 2,600 students. Musselman Library serves its campus population with thirteen librarians and nineteen staff members. In a small college environment, collaborating with other campus stakeholders is not only desirable, it is essential if the library wants …

In September 2015, our team launched The First World War Letters of H.J.C. Peirs (www.jackpeirs.org), a digital history initiative built on collaboration between faculty, students, and library staff. The project is founded on amazing primary source material, but with limited financial support and little dedicated staff time. We leveraged the creativity and hard work of our team members to build a website that is maintained by students and enhanced whenever possible with features and commentary from faculty and staff. Members of #TeamPeirs discussed the evolution of the project, the nature of our collaboration, and the intersection of audiences …

Collection Development And Plans For The Future!, Ellianie Vega Mar 2018

Collection Development And Plans For The Future!, Ellianie Vega

Blogging the Library

It’s finally starting to feel like spring, and I’m finally starting to develop my final project for my internship! So much has happened in the past few weeks; I’ve had the opportunity to observe a music class that was writing a musical and I’ve been focusing on collection development for an Afrofuturism collection. Collection development was actually much more difficult than I had anticipated, especially since Afrofuturism is such a timely and emerging genre. In the few weeks since I began the project, a handful of new Afrofuturism titles have been published to much acclaim, and even older books that …

Literature And Scholarship In Times Of Crisis, Radost A. Rangelova

2017 College Authors

When I was asked to talk about research, and about my own research, I thought it was important to recognize that much of my work I owe, first, to Research and Professional Development Grants that I have been fortunate to receive at Gettysburg, and also to the people, resources, and institutions that opened their doors to me during the time that I’ve spent doing research in Puerto Rico, including at the University of Puerto Rico and at the National Archives of Theater and Film. Today I would like to speak briefly not only about doing research in Puerto Rico, but …

Connecting Over Coffee: Extending Library Services For Students Through New Campus Partnerships, Kevin Moore, Meggan D. Smith

All Musselman Library Staff Works

One meeting with potential partners on campus can turn into a new, exciting initiative to reach underrepresented and first-generation college students. Librarians at a small, private liberal arts college will share how they collaborated with the Office of Multicultural Engagement on their campus to provide reference services to students outside of the library. Emphasis was focused on serving first year students from underrepresented groups, however, the service was open to and used by students from a variety of backgrounds and class years. The speakers will share lessons learned, plans for future development, and assessment strategies.

Leveraging Student Employee Expertise For Collection Projects, Karen A. Reiman-Sendi, Christopher A. Barnes, Pamela J. Mackintosh

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Collection stewardship responsibilities of academic librarians continue to be supported by approval plans, large e-resource packages, and material leasing programs. But while those technologies and programs can save time, librarians still find it challenging to engage with in-depth collection projects like systematic weeding, evaluation, and use analysis. At the same time, student employees are seeking opportunities for experiential learning and acquiring skills translatable to the professional world. The authors suggest some creative ways to match librarians’ collection needs and students’ job expectations by providing opportunities for these employees to collaborate with librarians in the management, development, and marketing of collections.
