The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel S. Lê, Marie-Louise Watson
University Library Faculty Publications
This article describes a practical way to teach student entrepreneurs to search and use market data for business startup plans. The conventional way of teaching students to find articles and business intelligence based on a class assignment can be challenging for many students without an academic business background. This library instruction approach sequentially uses three databases enriched with business data and infographics to support the development of critical thinking for student entrepreneurs. It teaches entrepreneurial personality support, analysis, visualization, and market mapping.

Library Support In Times Of Crisis: An Analysis Of Chat Transcripts During Covid, Sheeji Kathuria
Library Support In Times Of Crisis: An Analysis Of Chat Transcripts During Covid, Sheeji Kathuria
University Library Faculty Publications
This paper presents the analysis of over 4,000 chat questions from 2019-2020. Each chat question was individually categorized into broad level topics, and analyzed using sentiment analysis. During the COVID pandemic, there was an increase in the number of questions about accessing the physical collection, and a large decrease in questions about using the library space. The overall sentiments of the chat questions were much more negative during COVID. Tagging and analyzing chat questions in this way can offer unique insights for all types of libraries to appropriately staff the service and best support patron needs in times of crisis.

Quantifying Interdisciplinarity: Subject Librarians As Research Collaborators, David S. Nolen, Sheeji Kathuria, Evan Peacock
University Library Faculty Publications
Interdisciplinary research presents unique challenges and unique opportunities for collaboration, but measuring the impact of interdisciplinary research creates particular opportunities for subject librarians. Researchers working in the field of applied zooarchaeology collect data about ancient animal populations by examining animal remains found at archaeological sites. These data provide historic insights that would be of use to scholars working in a variety of disciplines, but the question has lingered among applied zooarchaeologists as to whether their colleagues in other disciplines have been discovering and citing the published data. The authors of the current study designed a citation analysis to measure the …

Using Machine Learning To Predict Chat Difficulty, Jeremy Walker, Jason Coleman
University Library Faculty Publications
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and potential utility of using machine learning and natural language processing techniques to develop models that can reliably predict the relative difficulty of incoming chat reference questions. Using a relatively large sample size of chat transcripts (N = 15,690), an empirical experimental design was used to test and evaluate 640 unique models. Results showed the predictive power of observed modeling processes to be highly statistically significant. These findings have implications for how library service managers may seek to develop and refine reference services using advanced analytical methods.

Meeting Them Where They Are: Designing Active-Learning Information Literacy Modules Within An Lms, Jill E. Anderson
University Library Faculty Presentations
The onslaught of the pandemic in 2020 has required us all to rework how we approach instruction. This presentation will focus on how a liaison librarian leveraged their growing knowledge of their university’s learning management system (LMS) to design active-learning information literacy modules for several humanities courses. Faculty at this large state university were expected to take a 4-week intensive course on “mastering online teaching,” offered monthly beginning in spring 2020 by the campus teaching and learning center. This course, taught via the LMS, was also designed to familiarize instructors with teaching with the LMS. As a result of taking …

Academic Libraries As Unlikely Defendants: A Comparative Fair Use Analysis Of The Georgia State University E-Reserves And Hathitrust Cases, Laura Burtle, Mariann Burright

Academic libraries rely on fair use for key functions in support of education. Among these functions are provision of electronic reserves, mass digitization, provision of access for print-disabled students, and preservation. These were the practices at issue in the 2008 Georgia State University e-reserves case and the 2012 HathiTrust case. This article explores the two lawsuits where libraries were sued for alleged copyright infringement. We explore how the courts in each case applied fair use to the facts of the case, compare and contrast the courts' analysis, and explain the role that transformative use plays in distinguishing the outcomes. Finally, …

Implementing A Scholarly Impact Outreach Program For Faculty And Graduate Students, Brenna Helmstutler
Implementing A Scholarly Impact Outreach Program For Faculty And Graduate Students, Brenna Helmstutler
University Library Faculty Presentations
There are two intersecting realities in research and academia today:
- There are greater expectations for individual faculty and academic departments to substantively demonstrate evidence of research productivity and impact for such applications as promotion and tenure, annual reporting, and benchmarking. Graduate students require knowledge of top articles and researchers in their discipline and those pursuing a career as faculty need to know how to determine their impact towards promotion and tenure.
- Database vendors and other content providers are regularly developing and offering robust, yet user-friendly, bibliometric and altmetric tools within current as well as new products. Many of the tools …

Integrating Fair Use Into Information Literacy: Perspectives From The Georgia State University Ereserves And Hathitrust Copyright Infringement Cases, Laura Burtle, Mariann Burright

Fair use is essential to information literacy because it empowers the student to use the works of others legally. Fair use in U.S. Copyright Law allows people to use the works of others without asking their permission under certain circumstances. But because fair use is a balancing test rather than bright line rules, it ultimately takes a court to decide its boundaries. The Georgia State University eReserves and the HathiTrust cases offer new decisions on applying fair use in higher education. The presenters will discuss an overview of the cases and provide approaches of how to integrate them into an …
