This presentation will share the results of a new initiative developed by the ETD Librarian at Florida International University (FIU) to develop a personal connection between students and the ETD Librarian. The goal is threefold; to provide a personal contact and open communication channel within the library to whom students can address publishing best practices and concerns with, to better inform and engage students in the metadata process of submitting theses and dissertations, and to spur the growth of knowledge and usage of ORCID. This presentation shares recent research exploring how and why students choose to use or not use the available ORCID and embargo options when submitting their research for publication in the institutional repository. The initial assumption was that students choosing to embargo their research were planning to publish and would therefore find ORCID a helpful tool going forward.

However, it was found that students who chose to embargo often did not bother to sign up with ORCID and those that did sign up with ORCID did not always embargo their research. It became clear that students either did not understand the …

Librarians Creating Connections: Reactions And Challenges To Open Access, Orcid, And The Embargo Option, Kelley F. Rowan

This presentation explores the challenges that librarians and graduate schools face in encouraging open access behaviours. While librarians realize the benefits of open access research for both current students and society as a whole, many disparate factors often converge, causing academic departments to actively counteract open access research practices. We will discuss some of the challenges such as geographic location and social climate, the beliefs about publishing opportunities lost or gained by open access ETDs, and student beliefs about future profits and the actual statistics.
