Library Staffing Patterns - Function- Or Subject-Focused?, Julia K. Nims Jan 2020

Library Staffing Patterns - Function- Or Subject-Focused?, Julia K. Nims

Academic libraries are organized to provide the best possible services given inevitable constraints, such as budgets, available personnel, and space. Recent literature on academic library restructuring has argued that libraries should reorganize their public services along functional lines, and eliminate the traditional, subject-based structure. Proponents of the ‘‘functional specialist’’ structure contend that it allows libraries to be more agile in meeting researcher needs and aligning with institutional priorities. Advocates of the ‘‘subject librarian’’ organization assert that the disciplinary knowledge and close relationships with academic departments engendered with the ‘‘subject librarian’’ approach outweigh the benefits of the functional structure. While several …

Project Overview

EMU’s Women in Philanthropy granted $5,000 to purchase library e-book versions of titles requested by EMU faculty and lecturers for use with upcoming classes. The library used an online form to solicit requests and purchased those titles that were available in library e-book format. The WIP Grant provided options for students in many Summer and Fall 2015 classes. Usage statistics showed heavy use of the e-books, including more than 1853 user sessions and 173 book or chapter downloads. Surveys of faculty and student participants showed overall enthusiasm for use of library e-books in classes and only minor technical …

Identifying and evaluating the oldest published content held by the library using a set of transfer criteria provided a means to systematically evaluate and, if necessary, move rare or unusual content into a more secure location. The process enabled us to correct cataloging errors, identify and address items with condition issues, be familiar with the library's unique holdings and finally, to identify and add content distinctly associated with EMU's history to the University Archives and Special Collections.

Gender Roles In Technology Product Advertisements In Library Trade Magazines, Julia K. Nims Mar 2009

Gender Roles In Technology Product Advertisements In Library Trade Magazines, Julia K. Nims

University Library Faculty Scholarship

Several studies on the depiction of gender roles in high tech product advertisements have concluded that women frequently are portrayed as passive users of technology while men are shown as masters of technological innovations. I examined ten issues from each of four library and information science trade magazines published in 2007-2008 to discover if advertisements for high tech products in them contain gender role stereotypes or if they more accurately reflect the use of technology by women librarians. Two titles – Library Journal and American Libraries – are more traditional library magazines, while Computers in Libraries and Online are newer …

I'Ve Got A Secret: Government Information Availability And Secrecy, Rhonda E. Fowler Jul 2007

I'Ve Got A Secret: Government Information Availability And Secrecy, Rhonda E. Fowler

University Library Faculty Scholarship

Secrets and information, what do they have in common? A secret is something you don’t want anyone to know, something you keep to yourself or those you trust. “Knowledge obtained from investigation” is the definition of information, according to Webster’s Dictionary. As a new government documents librarian, my interest was piqued by the subject of secrecy. As I looked for information on this topic, I thought information that exposed the vulnerabilities of the United States to a terrorist attack or gave away our technology secrets would be classified. I didn’t know that something could be classified at first, declassified, and …
