Once housed in a single room with materials shelved all the way to the ceiling, DePauw's Music Library is a beautiful two story space with spectacular views (particularly in the fall) of campus. While the space is nice, it's the collections and services provided by Sylvia Yang, Music & Performing Arts Librarian, that make DePauw's music library one of the best.

September 2022 Table Of Contents Newsletter - Research Help, Tiffany Hebb

Table of Contents Newsletter

Like everything else, the reference desk and the way we provide service at it has changed. What hasn’t changed is the need for assistance with difficult information seeking tasks. Libraries receive fewer questions in the background information area (e.g. dates, places) these days but spend time on more complex research questions. DePauw Libraries seek to meet the needs of researchers by staffing the research desk with trained students and making librarians readily available for one-on-one collaboration.

August 2022 Dean's Preface:

One of our most necessary research resources has, in my opinion, the worst name. Database. We subscribe (usually via an annual subscription or an occasional one time purchase) to nearly 200 and despite our best efforts there seems to be no better name for these powerful boxes of information!

Library databases include an increasing range of content from Articles and Images to Videos and Zeitungen and the library website provides a couple of pathways to search for and access this content. Our Databases A-Z list provides direct access to each database which allows you to search …

Are Infographics Worth It?: An Assessment Of Information Retention In Relation To Information Embedded In Infographics, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica A. Abbazio

Library Faculty publications

Infographics are an effective means to communicate with audiences, draw attention, and make concepts digestible in a quick and straightforward way. This study explores students’ opinions on infographics used in library instruction, and provides quantitative data to help librarians determine whether these tools will help students engage with text and retain key concepts. Based on research conducted with undergraduate music students at two universities, DePauw University and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, this paper examines how students understand and interact with content embedded in infographics, and measures retention of information presented in either plain-text or infographic form.

Double The Vocation, Double The Awe: An Examination Of Vocational Awe In Music Librarianship, Z. Sylvia Yang, Emily Vickers

Library Faculty publications

Building upon Ettarh’s call to dismantle vocational awe in librarianship, this article outlines the shared components of Western libraries and Western music that lay the groundwork for vocational awe in each of these institutions and explores the ways in which vocational awe uniquely manifests for workers in the interdisciplinary field of music librarianship. The article explores the narrative of music’s goodness, disciplinary training, and manifestations of vocational awe as they appear in the institutional cultures of practice of music and librarianship: inability to develop work-life balance, job creep, low morale, and inequitable compensation. In naming this phenomenon as it is …
