Nonknowledge: The Bibliographical Organization Of Ignorance, Stupidity, Error, And Unreason: Part Two, Jay H. Bernstein
Nonknowledge: The Bibliographical Organization Of Ignorance, Stupidity, Error, And Unreason: Part Two, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Starting with the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom paradigm in information science it is possible to derive a model of the opposite of knowledge having hierarchical qualities. A range of counterpoints to concepts in the knowledge hierarchy can be identified and ascribed the overall term “nonknowledge.” This model creates a conceptual framework for understanding the connections between topics such as error, ignorance, stupidity, folly, popular misconceptions, and unreason by locating them as levels or phases of nonknowledge. The concept of nonknowledge links heretofore disconnected discourses on these individual topics by philosophers, psychologists, historians, sociologists, satirists, and others. Subject headings provide access to the categories …

Untangling The Relationship Between Libraries, Young Adults And Web 2.0: The Necessity Of A Critical Perspective, Lucia Cedeira Serantes
Untangling The Relationship Between Libraries, Young Adults And Web 2.0: The Necessity Of A Critical Perspective, Lucia Cedeira Serantes
Publications and Research
Purpose: This paper addresses a gap in the analysis of the dynamic and challenging relationship between libraries, Web 2.0 and young adults, suggesting the relevance of a critical approach.
Methodology/Approach: This paper represents an exploratory literature review with the objective of identifying a possible gap in the way the LIS community is addressing the concept of Web 2.0.
Findings: Findings indicate that the research produced in other fields, such as Communication or Computer Science; the way young adults interrelate with new technologies; and the need for collaboration between practitioners and researchers justify and support the use of a critical perspective …

The Evaluation Of Use Of Electronic Resources And Services In Academic Libraries: A Study Of E-Metrics And Related Methods For Measurement And Assessment, Kanu A. Nagra
Publications and Research
This paper presents a review of literature for the evaluation of use of electronic resources and services in Academic libraries. E-metrics and similar methods for evaluation are discussed in detail. The paper highlights how some libraries approached e-metrics to start useful evaluations and dealt with technicalities to achieve better decision making for e-collection, services and infrastructure for their library users. The evaluation of use of e-resources and services is discussed in five parts explaining application of e-metrics, different methods to capture usage data in different settings, types of data requirement by libraries, complexities and technicalities involved in measurement of usage …

The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom Hierarchy And Its Antithesis, Jay H. Bernstein
The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom Hierarchy And Its Antithesis, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
The now taken-for-granted notion that data lead to information, which leads to knowledge, which in turnleads to wisdom was first specified in detail by R. L. Ackoff in 1988. The Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy is based on filtration, reduction, and transformation. Besides being causal and hierarchical, the scheme is pyramidal, in that data are plentiful while wisdom is almost nonexistent. Ackoff’s formulalinking these terms together this way permits us to ask what the opposite of knowledge is and whether analogous principles of hierarchy, process, and pyramiding apply to it. The inversion of the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy produces a series of opposing terms (including misinformation, error, …

Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams
Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams
Student Theses
As more scholarly and research materials are created in digital formats, institutions charged with managing, preserving, and disseminating these materials are increasingly adopting specialized software tools and environments created to fulfill these functions. Concurrently, subscriptions to serials databases provided by academic publishers are increasingly prohibitive and problematic. This paper surveys the adoption of digital institutional repositories by research institutions in the New York City region as of the Spring of 2009, and concludes that in spite of their potential advantages these systems are still not widely applied toward addressing the issues of preservation and access to their fullest potential.

Molly®, When Will You Come Again? : A Mobile Library Service For The Less Privileged, Krist Chan
Urban Library Journal
The National Library Board (NLB) launched a new mobile library service in Singapore on April 3, 2008. MOLLY® (mobile library), a mobile library bus, is the latest project to run on the streets of the island bringing library services to people not utilizing the extensive network of public libraries. After a comparative overview of different mobile library models in various countries, this paper introduces MOLLY® the prototype project and covers key aspects such as the conceptualization and objectives, special target user segments, outreach methodology and core activities.

Urban Academic Library Outreach To Secondary School Students And Teachers, M. Delores Carlito

The Mervyn H. Sterne Library at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is located in an urban area and therefore receives traffic from the community, particularly area schools. We encourage visits from these schools in order to promote information literacy, higher education, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and we recognize the importance of the library in the development of responsible citizenship, education, and culture. Since we encourage students to develop research skills before they attend college, we collaborate with area secondary schools on projects, papers, and activities by providing research instruction and support both at the schools and …

Library Services To Children, Teens And Families Experiencing Homelessness, Vikki C. Terrile
Urban Library Journal
Families with children are one of the fastest growing homeless populations in the United States, but are often left out of public library discussions of services to the homeless. This article will explore the demographics and educational issues surrounding children and teens who are experiencing homelessness in order to make the case that library services specifically for them are necessary. It will also look at the role library programs and services for their parents can play in improving literacy skills within the family unit. In addition, the article will examine model library services to children, teens and families experiencing homeless …
