A toolkit has been created to assist secondary teachers in using popular culture and the media in conjunction with explicit comprehension strategy instruction in the classroom in an effort to improve struggling students' comprehension. The toolkit consists of an introduction, examples and suggestions for using popular culture and media in the classroom, examples and guidelines for strategic comprehension instruction. CutTent literature and research regarding the use of popular culture and media in the classroom and effective comprehension strategy instruction were reviewed.

The process of curriculum design for a third grade information literacy skills unit was studied. Studies supporting the connection between a quality school library program and increased student achievement were examined for positive characteristics to be implemented into a third grade library program. State standards in reading, technology, and information skills were analyzed for integration into the design. The result is a third grade information literacy skills curriculum design for implementation into a library program. Implications for future third grade library curriculum improvements are discussed.

This project was undertaken to develop a library policy manual for the Selah School District libraries. Topics were collected from a variety of venues, manuals on the Internet,the.librarian list serv LM-NET, American.LibraryAssociation and the Washington Library Media Association. Lists generated from these sources were then narrowed down to the important management and operations topics. Many children do not have adequate access to print. To rectify this in her school, the author created an ongoing Book Swap Room. The author documented the reading growth of students by looking at their reading test data in conjunction with records of the number of books traded in the Room. A family survey was used on three occasions to determine book ownership in the home of students, and a student survey was used to determine whether the Book Swap Room was achieving its desired goal of reinforcing book ownership. The relationship between staff professional development in technology that enhanced staff efficiencies were studied. A model staff development program in technology has been developed to make connections between teacher's readiness and their mastery of technology skills. Research has been obtained that indicated a direct correction between teachers' readiness in technology and their implementation of technology into the classroom. Secondary teachers must be taught using inservices, practice skills and given opportunities to share their experiences with colleagues. Administrators must take leadership in developing and supporting a quality technology training program that recognizes the staffs' individualized needs.

The focus of this project was to create specific activities that teach students how to research material and use their critical thinking skills to present a product. The project implements an integrated approach with an emphasis on the intermediate grades. Throughout this project the students will be exploring a variety of ways to acquire the knowledge ofresearching quality information. Motivating The Reluctant Teen Reader To Use The High School Library, Mary Ellen Vartheuer

Twenty reluctant teen readers were surveyed to determine their library needs and interests. Interviews with twelve high school librarians yielded suggestions for motivating high school students to read. Input from these two sources was used in developing a library program consisting of motivational activities, designed to encourage young adults to use their high school library and to read more. The resulting library program and a list of library materials ordered to meet the needs of these specific students are included.

This paper presents an investigation into providing a model and designing and organizing a learning resource center (LRC) for the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Including existing and potential resources and/or media used in teaching and general church ministries, the plan makes provision for systematically using these resources by evaluation. Recommendations for the learning resource center were based on the review of related literature, the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and input from church members.

Identifying The Readability Of The First Grade Books In The Vale School Library Using The Computerized Spache Formula, Doris Jean Byerley Rogers

Books were identified with first grade readability in the Vale Elementary School library, Cashmere, Washington, utilizing the computerized Spache formula. Listing of supplementary books and ways the supplementary books could be used in the classroom were also studied. Forty-one books with first grade readability were found in the 8,000 voiume collection. ·Three bibliographies were included: (a) Vale books with first grade readabili_ty, (b) publishers with first grade supplementary materials, and (c) a list of book selection aids. The writer concludes that trade books with first grade readability were difficult to identify.

Learning Activities To Enable Students To Master Content Area Skills, Roberta Carol Batey

The need for teaching locational skills to junior high students was examined. A syllabus was developed to aid content area teachers in presenting locational skills to their students. The specific areas covered were use of the text as a tool, efficient use of common reference materials, efficient use of locational indexes, and an awareness of library arrangement and the Dewey Decimal System. The syllabus includes thirty-three teaching activities, an answer key, and notes to the teacher.

The Fifth Grade Student As An Active Participant In The Selection Of School Library Books, Catherine Spada Mcleod

The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth grade students could be consistent and productive participants in the process of selecting books for a school library. Forty-six students completed a Reading Interest Inventory and participated in a book selection activity.

Chi-square test results did not support the hypothesis that there would be no significant difference between the results of these two selection activities. Student perceptions of their involvement in this process were also included.

This paper presents a program for teaching media/research skills by integrating them with study assignments in curricular areas developed by classroom teachers. Curriculum For High School Students Who Are Responsible For Elementary Library Services, Delitha Carpenter

In order to alleviate some of the workload from the sole librarian of the Hartline School District in Eastern Washington, high school students were utilized as library aides. However, that created another problem which was how to efficiently train the student librarians. From this need, a curriculum was designed for teaching library aides for regular, clerical duties, to tell stories to the elementary students, and to aid in the typing and filing of catalog cards.

A Measure Of The Library Skills Of High School Graduates Of Washington State As Demonstrated By Freshman Of Central Washington State College, Malcolm Douglas Alexander

This paper presents the study of library skills possessed by the 1971 entering freshman class at Central Washington State College. The study was designed to provide data to library faculty about the skills in which the students required instruction. The students tested possessed a selected list of library skills at the 47th percentile as measured by Ethel M. Feagley' s test A Library Orientation Test For College Freshmen. The hypothesis that they would not possess the skills at the 50th percentile was upheld.
