The FY24 Usability Testing Program was designed to iteratively assess user experience at Milner Library. The program gathers data through usability testing of the library's website and discovery layer, as well as survey questions about users' experiences with library services. Test #4 gathers information from library users about their perceptions of research consultations to inform service development. Takeaways and recommendations are included in the report.

As librarians at a comprehensive university, we sought to understand the data service offerings among R1 and R2 university libraries to guide initial data services development at our institution. To do so, we undertook an environmental scan to discover the services, information, and resources promoted on R1 and R2 library’s websites, and aggregated our findings into a database for use by other librarians and data services professionals.

Data management makes data more findable, usable, and reproducible; supports an ethical, responsible research environment; and meets funder and journal data-sharing requirements. Since the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s 2013 memorandum requiring federal agencies to increase public access to the results of federally funded research, many funders and journals have mandated data planning and sharing. In this paper, the authors discuss their academic library’s role in promoting collaboration and visibility among various data service providers on campus, including those provided by the library. Bringing together these data providers for a one-day event at the library, Love Data @ UH, speakers and audience members were able to meet and talk about data management, data visualization, and other data-related services provided at University of Houston campus. The authors also discuss how the event was planned, with recommendations for others considering holding a similar event.

Data services, though a longstanding specialization, is a fast-growing and in-demand niche in the academic librarian job market. That said, it is still somewhat of a mystery to many outside of a small circle in academic librarianship. This essay attempts to remedy this mystification. Data curation exists within a larger framework of laws and policies covering topics like copyright and data retention. These obligations must be considered in order to properly care for data as it is being created and preserved. While laws may transition slowly, the policies applying to research data by funding bodies, institutions, and journals have seen significant change since the turn of the century. The camp was run by the Data Services Librarian and intended for other librarians to become more comfortable with data management concepts. The topics covered include: data management best practices, data management plans, and data repositories. Each 1-hour session consisted of 2 hands-on exercises. However, the DMPs frequently capture only initial plans for data at the end of a grant application, often written just hours before the submission deadline. A lot can be learned about research data by participating in research. It is one way librarians can learn about data life cycle and workflow needs of researchers. The Purdue University Libraries’ approach to data management evolved out of investigation of the needs for interdisciplinary research and the ability of librarians to partner and engage in it. The service includes data reference, consulting, planning, and collaboration. It is embedded in interactions across campus and in the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR). PURR is an institutional collaboration that provides help in data management planning, data publishing and discovery, and data preservation.
