OLAC Publications and Training Materials
Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs Using RDA and MARC21 builds upon the work of the 2008 Guide to Cataloging DVD and Blu-ray Discs Using AACR2r and MARC21, which in turn updated the 2002 Guide to Cataloging DVDs Using AACR2r Chapters 7 and 9 created by the DVD Cataloging Task Force of OLAC.
The focus of this new document is to provide a set of “best practice” recommendations rather than a step-by-step instruction manual for cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs. One reason for this shift is that RDA cataloging practice is far from settled, particularly in regard …
Cataloging Redesigned: Is Outsourcing Still A Dirty Word?, Amy B. Parsons
Cataloging Redesigned: Is Outsourcing Still A Dirty Word?, Amy B. Parsons
Faculty Bibliography
With today’s financial constraints, librarians can never get too far away from the challenge of reorganizing, redesigning or reimagining their workflows, staffing or departments. Does the term outsourcing still scare you? How have libraries adapted to the threat or reality of outsourcing in their organizations? This presentation is a look back at outsourcing from case studies that were published in 1997. While investigating this provocative topic I discovered the book “Outsourcing Library Technical Services Operations: Practices in Academic, Public, and Special Libraries” , edited by Karen Wilson and Mary Lou Colver. This is a book of case studies describing libraries …

Initiating Cultural Shifts In Perceptions Of Cataloging Units Through Interaction Assessment, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen, Liz Woolcott
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Points of contact formulate the culture of any organization and shape the perceptions of decision makers and colleagues alike. This research project investigated the interactions between Cataloging and Metadata Services staff and other library employees by analyzing interactions. This article summarizes the results of data gathered from interaction assessments and compares them with surveys about the current perceptions of the cataloging unit at the Utah State University Libraries. It discusses the ways these results have influenced existing unit workflows to enhance awareness of cataloging and metadata contributions to the library and posits possible ways to continue such initiatives moving forward.

Technical Services Reports and Statistics
This report lists the total amounts invoiced to the University of Rhode Island Libraries by the bibliographic utility OCLC during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.
Costs are broken down by invoice date and category and include all library locations (RIN, RIU, and RIX).
We pay two fixed monthly fees for each location: one for cataloging (FIX9832) and one for interlibrary loan (FIX9836). Note that for FY2017, the former third fixed monthly fee for access (FIX6600) was eliminated and absorbed into the fixed fees for cataloging and interlibrary loan. This accounts for part of the increase in fixed cataloging …

In this project, investigators collected data on K-12 e-textbook management and related services to pre-service teachers in academic libraries. We administered a pre-site-visit survey to seven colleges and universities that we identified as having strong teacher education programs supported by curriculum centers. We then conducted site visits to each location to collect data. Additionally, we distributed a survey via our institutional vendor representatives to three, large K-12 textbook publishers. With this poster, we share our research methodology and findings with other librarians, K-12 e-textbook publishers, and other interested parties. The results of this research have provided support for planning the …

Mainstreaming University Publications: Designing Collaboration Across Library Units For Discovery And Access, Cindy Cline, Ruth E. Bryan
Mainstreaming University Publications: Designing Collaboration Across Library Units For Discovery And Access, Cindy Cline, Ruth E. Bryan
Library Presentations
Various divisions, branches, and departments within the University of Kentucky Libraries collect University publications, most especially the University Archives. Depending on the reasons for acquisition and the Library area's descriptive practices, the publications are more or less discoverable by fellow librarians and by researchers. Is it possible to develop workflows that allow the University Archivist to collect and maintain University publications at a collection or unit level, while simultaneously providing bibliographic item-level access to the same publications? In today's environment of high levels of technology, library and archives online management systems, and discovery systems, is it possible for libraries and …

Collaborating On Description And Digitization: The Perry Special Collections Land Indentures Project, Rebecca A. Wiederhold, Ryan K. Lee, Shanna Bessendorfer
Faculty Publications
A unique collection of English land indentures from the 16th to 20th centuries is at the center of a large undertaking at BYU’s Perry Special Collections. Born of a simple faculty digitization request, a much larger project with the potential to benefit other classes and researchers developed through the collaboration and coordination of multiple departments and individuals. This project required close collaboration between the faculty member who made the original digitization request, the Special Collections curator, our Collection Management team, the Conservation lab, our Manuscripts Cataloger, the digital lab, our Metadata Cataloging Specialist and multiple student workers. This presentation gives …
The Emergence Of The Metadata Cataloger: Are Cataloging And Metadata Two Separate Fields?, Rachel Turner
The Emergence Of The Metadata Cataloger: Are Cataloging And Metadata Two Separate Fields?, Rachel Turner
ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference
As a new Librarian straight out of my MSIS program, I am seeing a shift in the idea of what constitutes the position of “Cataloging Librarian.” As a student worker at UT Austin while in library school, and in my current position as Cataloging Librarian at Binghamton University, I have seen in both places a rising discussion of how cataloging should evolve to keep up with the reframing and rebranding that is taking place throughout all aspects of libraries and librarianship. A common answer that seems to be rising is that cataloging is and needs to continue its reframing to …

Rethinking Library Technical Services
Rethinking Library Technical Services
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this roundtable presentation was to discuss the value or lack of value in tracking cataloging statistics; to query how other technical service departments are handling poor quality vendor records for electronic resources; and the stress of limited budgets and shrinking staff. The title of this discussion came from the book with the same title by Mary Beth Weber. The attached document contains topics of interest within that book, quotes from that book, as well as related resources.

Providing Access To And Discovery Of Oral Histories At The University Of Kentucky, Marsha Seamans, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.
While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.
This project had a number of decision points:
- Since discovery is …
