Moody Blues: The Social Web, Tagging, And Nontextual Discovery Tools For Music, Susannah Cleveland, Gwen Evans

University Libraries Faculty Publications

A common thread in discussions about the Next Generation Catalog is that it should incorporate features beyond the mere textual, one-way presentation of data. At the same time, traditional textual description of music materials often prohibits effective use of the catalog by specialists and nonspecialists alike. Librarians at Bowling Green State University have developed the HueTunes project to explore already established connections between music, color, and emotion, and incorporate those connections into a nontextual discovery tool that could enhance interdisciplinary as well as specialist use of the catalog.

OLAC Publications and Training Materials

Playaway devices were developed in 2005 by Findaway World LLC. (http://store.playawaydigital.com/). A Playaway is described as a “self-playing digital audio book” and is a device that contains a pre-loaded audio file in a proprietary format called ACELP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_Code_Excited_Linear_Prediction). The device requires one AAA battery and a set of earphones for playback and listening. Playaways contain almost exclusively spoken word recordings, but some musical content is available as well. According to the distributor, the focus of Playaways will remain audiobooks. Given the nature of a Playaway device, these materials include aspects of both sound recordings and electronic resources. They should be …

Experiences Of A Reluctant Supervisor: Discovering New Skills And Innovative Ways To Manage, Kerri Scannell Baunach

Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians

After going through a long reorganization, technical services at the University of Kentucky looked very different in 2005 than the team-based organization of recent years. A new organization also created new departments and units as well as new names and terminology. One new group was the Special Formats Unit, created by putting together the various catalogers who were not located in the central technical services area of the main library. The many challenges this unit faced included: having a new, first-time supervisor; physical separation with offices in three buildings; changes in job responsibilities; and, with a variety of job duties, …

After The System Upgrade Or Migration: A Cataloging Checklist, Sheryl Stump, Rick Torgerson

The Southeastern Librarian

At present. integrated library system (ILS) upgrades and migrations seem to be coming faster and more frequently. The reasons for this trend are many. among them being: 1) hardware upgrades are common due to the need for more memory to run the software; 2) software upgrades and migrations are desired because of the promise of new or improved features; 3) changes in system vendor ownership can affect changes in their software; 4) software and hardware upgrades are needed due to the advanced age of either or both; and 5) system upgrades on a yearly basis may be necessary to prevent …

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The digital age has caused the paradigm to shift in academic libraries both in terms of their collections and the roles of their personnel. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries (UNL Libraries), taskforces were formed to study metadata schemes used at UNL Libraries. The taskforces identified the various metadata schemes in use and the role of various departments within UNL Libraries in the creation of metadata. They made recommendations about how to document decisions …

Los Encabezamientos De Materia En Español Y La Lista Sears: Una Historia Interamericana, Tina Gross

Library Faculty Publications

Since its first appearance in 1923, the Sears List of Subject Headings has sought to provide small and medium-sized libraries with an affordable list of subject headings of suitable size and scope. As one of two major subject headings systems in use in the United States, it has been looked to as a resource by librarians who have sought to translate or adapt an existing list of subject headings in order to create systems of Spanish-language subject headings.

Of the handful of lists of subject headings developed in Latin America in the first half of the 20th century, two have …
