Research has shown that at least 94% of medical students use Wikipedia as an information resource (Usaid, 2012), despite medical school faculty telling them not to. In fact, medical schools do not train students to improve Wikipedia or use it critically (Azzam, 2017). The Wikiproject Medicine course was created at the invitation and in partnership with Dr. Amin Azzam at the University of California San Francisco, who started the original program in 2013. Objectives: Information literacy (IL) publications have been examined in many disciplines, but there is limited published literature to assess health sciences librarians’ productivity on IL research. This study aimed to examine the status and characteristics of IL research authored by health sciences librarians over the period of 2008 to 2018.

Methods: Bibliometrics, the statistical analysis of publications, was used to assess the indicators of productivity, collaboration, and visibility on IL research by health sciences librarians. When academics receive emails that start with “Wassup bro?” and students think digital literacy means “computer skills for old people”, how does the library bridge the gap between students and academics? Increasingly, libraries play a pivotal role in supporting learning in this critical space. However, more could be done. For many years, Flinders University Library has provided a library quiz, primarily aimed at first year students. Starting life as a paper-based assignment, the quiz was moved into the University’s learning management system in the 2000s. The library quiz focused purely on practical information literacy skills: how to search the catalogue, how to search databases etc.

As time went on, it became clear that the quiz was not working. The videos and screenshots quickly became obsolete with frequent database interface changes. We were constantly updating the quiz at our busiest time of the year. It just was not sustainable. More …
