As the program leading coordinator, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian collaborated with Dr. Yanjie Wang of Asian and Asian American Studies and Dr. Kevin Wetmore of Theatre Arts to realize this third edition of the annual Women’s Voices series at the LMU Library in Spring 2017. This interdisciplinary library program offered unique glimpses into the lives and experience of women who lived in China from the 16th to early 20th century. When a collection of over 600 photographs and negatives was discovered in the backlog of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Library’s Department of Archives and Special Collections, there were moments of surprise, intrigue, and fascination. While information about the collection is limited, the pictures have presumably been taken by Werner von Bolternstern, a photographer and avid postcard collector, who donated the collection (among many others) to LMU. The Werner von Bolternstern Shanghai Photograph and Negative Collection offers rare visual records and remarkable documentation of life in Shanghai, China, from 1937 to 1949. This 2016 guest lecture for the UCLA Information Studies Graduate Course "Collection Development" offered an overview of collection development in academic libraries and illustrated the most essential aspects of building library collections in the 21th century. Focusing on the William H. Hannon Library at LMU as an example, the lecture elaborated on the variety of subject collection, library liaison program, selection criteria, collecting for Archives and Special Collections, and building digital collections.

More Than Images: Postcards And New Reflections On Information Literacy, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian

Focusing on a case study of postcard instruction for an American Culture course in the William H. Hannon Library at LMU, this presentation discusses how library instruction with postcards works within the new ACRL Information Literacy Framework. Specifically, Native Americans postcards are great resources to explore and illustrate one of the Framework concepts, “Authority is constructed and contextual.” Also, this presentation highlights metaliteracy, in particular, the affective engagement with information. Alongside behavioral and cognitive analytic skills, affective value is central to learning with cultural artifacts and visual resources, such as postcards.

This joint presentation showcases three Loyola Marymount University Digital Collections commemorating the centennial of the Los Angeles Aqueduct: J. D. Black Papers, Big Pine Citizen Newspaper Collection, and Werner von Boltenstern Postcard Collection. Shilpa Rele discusses the initiation of this digital project with grant funding from the Metabolic Studio, collaborative project management, and digitization of historical materials housed in the William H. Hannon Library’s Archives and Special Collections. Rachel Wen-Paloutzian elaborates on the three diverse digital collections, creation of descriptive metadata for these collections, and metadata best practices guideline for the CONTENTdm content management system.

In Summer 2013, with consultation of Shilpa Rele, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian wrote the best practices guidelines for descriptive metadata creation and management of LMU Digital Collections. From then to Summer 2015, Wen-Paloutzian successfully implemented the best practices in creating and enhancing over 3,400 original descriptive metadata records for 12 digital collections at LMU.
