Purpose

The study examined the cataloging and classification training of users in library and information science and their use of library catalogs at the Kwara State University Library, Nigeria. Training is a vital necessity for performing any professional responsibility. Therefore, the trainee's actions towards the training program cannot be affected.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a descriptive research approach. It surveyed a sample of 250 university library users selected from a population of 515 through random sampling.

This article details the multi-year process of adding a 3,200 item campus collection to a university library’s catalog. The collection, housed outside of the library itself, belongs to the university’s Confucius Institute (CI). While acknowledging increasing political discomfort nationwide about Confucius Institutes, the university library nevertheless sought to increase discoverability and access to the unique set of materials by cataloging the entire collection. This paper explores the process of converting records created with the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core metadata scheme to records that comply with Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC), using the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Metadata Standards Crosswalk. Justification for conducting such conversions in actual information organizations and challenges presented during the crosswalking process are explored.
