Homeward Bound: How To Move An Entire Cataloging Unit To Remote Work, Andrea Payant, Becky Skeen

Utah State University Libraries Cataloging and Metadata Services (CMS) unit, including student workers, transitioned to remote cataloging in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The presentation will outline the process undertaken by supervisors to evaluate and modify services and workflows to continue cataloging service during the time when the library was shut down.

• Trained in Classical History with emphasis on the oral tradition, theater, and storytelling in the ancient world • Folklore student of Grant Bulltail
• History of excellence at the Merrill-Cazier Library and interest in the Fife Folklore Archive and Special Collections
• Given an opportunity to intern in SCA beginning in the Summer of 2019 during which Randy Williams mentioned a collection of oral histories provided by Grant Bulltail, I jumped at the opportunity
• Little did any of us realize the immense size and scope of this amazing collection

Utah State University Libraries (USU) employs community-based crowdsourcing metadata practices that provide in-depth, collaborative strategies that go beyond more commonly used collecting methods. Improved metadata quality is a result of working closely with donors, community scholars, students, and the public to describe cultural heritage collections fairly and thoroughly. This article provides an overview of successful ways to collaborate with those outside of traditional library units to create more diverse, equitable and inclusive descriptions of archival resources.

This Dublin Core application profile supersedes the Metadata Guidelines for the Mountain West Digital Library (2006). It is intended to guide the creation of new metadata (i.e., created after June 1, 2010) by members and contributing partners of the MWDL. The Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) provides a portal (http://mwdl.org) to digital resources in universities, colleges, public libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, government agencies, and other entities in Utah, Nevada, and other parts of the U.S. West.
Cheryl Walters served as Chair of the Metadata Task Force that wrote this profile.

Funded by a grant awarded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in the fall of 2001, the University of Denver (Denver, Colorado) spearheaded a multi-state collaborative initiative to create a virtual collection of widely dispersed digital resources on the topic, Western trails. As part of this initiative, 23 institutions in four Western states were awarded mini-grants to create digital content and metadata for resources related to Western trails. In addition to creation of a virtual collection of digital resources, another significant component of this multi-state initiative was development of a set of Dublin-Core based best practices by …
