The following is an edited transcript of the talk given by Professor Pinney to the Syracuse University Library Associates on 25 September 1992. Professor Pinney is the editor of The Letters of Rudyard Kipling.

Though Kipling is known to have visited New York State, it is unlikely that he ever saw the streets of Syracuse. However, he is notably present in the city now through the large, important, and growing collection of his letters and printed works assembled here in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections.
