The Digital Collection Assessment and Use learning module introduces the use of the Digital Public Library of America (dp.la) API to assess descriptive metadata practices from the perspective of subject specialists. Subject experts are encouraged to use this toolkit to consider how their expertise can be used to support access to knowledge.

The learning module is published in the #DLFteach Toolkit: Lesson Plans for Digital Library Instruction. This presentation defines metadata and introduces the social context and history of encoded knowledge, the use and reuse of metadata, the benefits and drawbacks of standardized information exchange, and the role of metadata in the preservation of digital objects. This three hour presentation is broken into sections and depends on interactives and thoughtful discussion.
