Mapping South Central Minnesota: An Aerial Photograph Digitization Project, Heidi J. Southworth
Mapping South Central Minnesota: An Aerial Photograph Digitization Project, Heidi J. Southworth
Library Services Publications
In 2021, a team consisting of Evan Rusch (Government Documents/Reference and Instruction Librarian), Nicole Smith (Maps Technician), Heidi Southworth (Digital Initiatives Librarian), and student workers Britney Hartmann, Samuel Lemma, Jasmyne Fisher began digitization of 27,441 unique aerial photographs. These aerial photographs are from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) District 7 covering south central Minnesota from 1957-2006. They are housed in the Dr. Mary T. Dooley Map Library at Minnesota State University, Mankato. These photographs are heavily utilized by students and faculty in our geography and engineering departments and by other researchers who visit our campus. Through digitization, we have …

Textbook Affordability + Wordpress + Dc Api = Unique Etextbook Portal Collaboration, Lee Dotson, Bobby Ciullo, Lily Dubach, Kerri Bottorff
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As part of a textbook affordability initiative, the University of Central Florida Libraries sought ways to inform students that hundreds of required textbooks are available for free as library eTextbooks. When other methods did not include necessary information such as a link to the eTextbook or other details, a secondary method was investigated: creating an eTextbook Portal. An eTextbook Portal serves as a searchable webpage to help students locate eTextbooks that match their courses. A collaboration between the institutional repository, textbook affordability, and web services produced this creative solution to organize and share information for each eTextbook using Digital Commons …

Exploring Edi Strategies In Metadata And Cataloging, Tomeka Jackson, Jessica Serrao
Presentations
This webinar examines equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategies and challenges in metadata and cataloging. The presenters first investigate what EDI is and why it is essential to the field of librarianship. Next, they explore a brief historical timeline that shaped the events of EDI in metadata and cataloging. After exploring its origins, they then examine the strategies academic institutions have formulated, and particularly the work at Clemson University with the Libraries' Digital Collections metadata. This webinar aims to explore, analyze, and understand EDI techniques in librarianship and how they can be added to or addressed in participants' collections. The …

E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels
E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. This hobbles attempts to make e-books available on virtual shelves for serendipitous discovery and to distinguish collections of e-books in related subjects like …
Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. Currently LST research gives cause for many to regard learning …

This presentation details remediation work done on harmful legacy metadata as part of the Syracuse University Libraries digital collections migration of the Sideshow Performers Collection, which contains digitized images from the Ronald G. Becker Collection of Charles Eisenmann photographs. The discussion focuses on deconstructing the legacy information and reconstructing it in ways that center the individual performer depicted, rather than portraying them as a medicalized specimen.
No session recording is available, but presenter's notes are included on the slides.

Practicing Care: A Look At The Application Of Care Ethics To Metadata Creation And Remediation, Kiley Jolicoeur
Practicing Care: A Look At The Application Of Care Ethics To Metadata Creation And Remediation, Kiley Jolicoeur
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
The process of creating and stewarding descriptive metadata is often approached with a focus on standardization. However, utilizing an approach grounded in care ethics to construct a relationship between the metadata creator and the people who are the creators and subjects of the archival materials can provide better descriptive metadata. The improvement is focused on allowing digital archives to give people appearing in the archive the respect and attention they deserve, as well as providing important historical information to users. This presentation details a concept-in-practice discussion of the employment of an approach grounded in care ethics on the remediation of …

Reaching high school students before they set foot on campus would allow writing centers to increase awareness of services while also making personal connections to students, which has been proven to increase student retention. Targeting these students can be difficult and expensive, but our writing center collaborated with library services and our admissions office to create a program about finding scholarship opportunities/writing scholarship essays that was inexpensive, targeted local high schools, and initial results indicate that this program is beneficial to our university’s recruitment efforts. We will discuss our findings and how this program could be replicated by other institutions.

These emails also personally reached out and regularly informed the students of information literacy skills such as navigating the library website, subject guides, tutoring center, and citation help. Additionally, the students received a short …

Using the lenses of structural, systems, cultural, and political theory-based metaphors, a team of academic library leaders made informed and strategic decisions targeted at improving specific aspects of their organization. This resulted in improvements to the culture and structure of the organization as well as a better understanding of the political and systems influences at play. The lenses will be presented visually through illustrative metaphors such as through eyeglasses with a jungle in focus and described as applicable for most library organizations.

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: A Systems Interoperability Project, Sara Hoover, Jolinda L. Thompson
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
Background: In 2018 our library migrated to Ex Libris’s Alma and its discovery service Primo. Alma allows content from OAI-PMH compliant archives to be loaded to Primo for discovery. Our library has a Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) system and librarians were eager to explore including IR content in Primo. Post-migration a feed was established between the IR and Primo, but there were issues with adding all IR content and the feed was removed. Consequently, we wanted to explore alternatives that would allow for the integration of more selective IR content.
Description: For our pilot project, we explored the possibility …
