Objective: The research provides an understanding of pandemic information needs and informs professional development initiatives for librarians in disaster medicine. Methods: Utilizing a multisite, comparative case series design, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews and examined supplementary materials in the form of organizational documents, correspondence, and websites to create a complete picture of each case. The rigor of the case series was ensured through data and investigator triangulation. Interview transcripts were coded using NVivo to identify common themes and points of comparison. Results: Comparison of the four cases revealed a distinct difference between “client-initiated” and “librarian-initiated” provision of pandemic information. Librarian-initiated …

Journal Make-Over: Practical Steps To Better Journals, Irene Perciali
Irene Kamotsky
This webinar presents the strategies that commercial publishers use to improve the profile and impact of a journal. A few simple steps can make a significant difference for many journals. Irene emphasizes four essential steps toward better journals: recruiting more submissions, conveying credibility through the journal's homepage and design, speeding editorial workflows, and building your readership. Drawing on the nearly 500 journals on the bepress Digital Commons platform, the webinar also suggests specific benchmarks for success. The presentation is designed for library staff as well as faculty and student editors.

In this age of information abundance, do you wonder if your students have the skills to recognize the kind of information they need to complete assignments, and then to locate, evaluate and use that information effectively? In this workshop, participants will develop an understanding of how to integrate information literacy skills into assignments and teaching in support of DePaul’s new university learning goals and strategic plan. The team of presenters will highlight national information literacy standards, provide an overview the DePaul University Library’s information literacy instruction program, and illustrate ways in which faculty and the library have collaborated to target …

Your Library Website Stinks And It's Your Fault, Matthew Reidsma
Matthew Reidsma
Library websites stink. They are difficult to use and create tension between us and our patrons. This is a talk about library websites, but it's really a talk about people. It's a talk about our library patrons, a talk about us, what's wrong with the way we're doing things, how and who it hurts, and what we can do about it.

The study of food preservation in Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) that undergo extreme changes in climate is the focus in this data curation profile. Specifically, the goal is to create a tool to allow the Department of Defense to ship MREs with the expiration information included. The data management needs include the security of the data because the data cannot be publicly shared without permission. The researcher would like to be able to securely store data in a digital asset management system that could be accessed remotely as long as security and privacy could be maintained.

In The Loop: One Librarian's Experiences Teaching Within First-Year Learning Communities, Nancy Frazier
Nancy Frazier
Unique as snowflakes, learning communities are formed in countless ways. Some are designed specifically for first-year students, while others offer combined or clustered upper-level courses. Most involve at least two linked courses, and some add residential and social components. Many address core general education and basic skills requirements. Learning communities differ in design, yet they are similar in striving to enhance students' academic and social growth. First-year learning communities foster experiences that have been linked to academic success and retention. They also offer unique opportunities for librarians interested in collaborating with departmental faculty and enhancing teaching skills. This article will …

Collecting Campus Culture: Collaborations And Collisions, Meg Miner, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

From the 2007 implementation of Illinois Wesleyan University’s institutional repository (IR), an archivist and special collections librarian and a scholarly communications librarian have worked on its development and expansion from each position’s unique perspective. They have found themselves united on some fronts, but divided at times on big picture questions such as the definition of campus culture and the extent to which the IR should contain products of that culture, how best to describe and structure collections, and who should be responsible for certain collections. Through regular dialogue on these concerns and efforts to understand each other’s perspective, the colleagues’ …
