This is a collaboratively-written call for the American Historical Association to appoint a task force to survey the profession as to the place of digital historical scholarship in promotion and tenure and graduate student training and to recommend standards and guidelines for the profession to follow. Government workers at New York’s Ellis Island have been accused of murdering ancestral names to serve their own purposes and prejudices. Despite zero evidence to support this accusation, the myth stubbornly persists. They did not change names. They worked from manifests, which were governed by law.

Service Learning is a quickly growing movement within higher education that empowers students to utilize classroom knowledge to solve a problem or effect a change within their local community. Information Literacy is critical for getting students to understand the “why” and “how” that should ground all service learning projects.

This presentation will begin with an overview of the service learning movement. Next, I will present a case study of my experiences as an embedded librarian in an Environmental Studies Senior Seminar. The presentation will conclude with a summary of emerging best practices for incorporating information literacy into service learning courses.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, law books of various types contained the vital information needed by Virginia’s practicing attorneys and judges. Access to these resources, however, was generally limited to personal collections and a handful of libraries. Undergraduate research (UR) programs attract highly motivated students who often continue on to graduate/professional schools but may lack necessary information literacy skills. Collaboration with UR programs provides librarians new opportunities to help students develop these skills and work with specialized collections in the context of a research experience. In this webinar, librarians and UR administrators share their experiences in forging collaborations based on UR and library training resources, explain how information literacy skills programming has been embedded into UR, and demonstrate how this partnership has led to greater visibility of library services, collections and UR among all undergraduates.

Nebraska U: A Collaborative History (http://unlhistory.unl.edu) is a collaboration between faculty and staff in Archives and Special Collections (Brink, Ducey, and Jewell) and the department of History (Seefeldt). This project engages undergraduates in archival research, historical synthesis, and digital project creation.

Nebraska U uses digital technology to provide a research framework for students exploring the way the study of history is transformed using new media publication forms. Biographical Sketch

Hastings Keith (1915-2005), a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, began his political career, in 1952 when he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. In 1958 he was elected to the United States Congress out of Massachusetts as a Republican representing Southeastern Massachusetts, which included all or parts of Plymouth, Bristol, Dukes, Nantucket, and Barnstable (Cape Cod) Counties. He would go on to serve seven terms in Congress, retiring after his term expired in 1972.

Keith was referred to as the “Cranberry Congressman” after he helped the Plymouth County cranberry industry recover from a national rumor in 1959 that …
