In March of 2008 an Ad Hoccommittee of Science Librarians from the University of Massachusetts Five Campus System convened to discuss the challenges of e-science and prepare the Libraries for their role in e-science initiatives. Three primary outcomes intended to support e-science activities emerged from the work of the Ad Hoc committee.

Libraries Interact is a group blog established in 2006 to focus on topics of interest to Australian libraries and their friends. After 18 months the blog is still going strongly with a core membership of librarians spread around Australia who rarely meet in person and over 300 posts on topics covering all library sectors. This paper will look at the practical ways that web 2.0 tools and services are employed by the core group of contributors to Libraries Interact. These include: Google Groups, Peanut Butter wiki, Wordpress, Frappr and others.

Taking The Paper Out Of News: A Case Study Of Taloussanomat, Europe's First Online-Only Newspaper, Neil J. Thurman, Merja Myllylahti

Using in-depth interviews, newsroom observation, and internal documents, this case study presents and analyses changes that have taken place at Finnish financial daily Taloussanomat since it stopped printing on 28 December 2007 to focus exclusively on digital delivery via the Web, email, and mobile. It reveals the savings that can be achieved when a newspaper no longer prints and distributes a physical product; but also the revenue lost from subscriptions and print advertising. The consequences of a newspaper's decision to go online-only are examined as they relate to its business model, website traffic, and editorial practice. The findings illustrate the …

Today, numerous metatheories exist in information science and create a dynamic climate, yet also some confusion. The past winter semester of 2009, 24 students participated in a new course at the Faculty of Information, INF2305: The Information Experience in Context. Our goal was to discover what information scientist Marcia Bates calls, “the red thread of information in the social texture of people’s lives” (1999, p. 1048). Put another way, we sought to look at a variety of situations from an iSchool perspective to determine “What’s going on with information here?” Answering the question required a fusion of information theory and ethnographic method that was then applied by each student to an independent research project. This paper suggests that LIS might benefit from critical political economy as a way of theorizing and responding to enclosures of information commons. The autonomist Marxist re-invigoration of ‘primitive accumulation’ offers a register for apprehending contemporary erosions of the commons. Autonomist Marxism also helps conceptualize resistance to enclosures.
