Despite conspicuous progress in providing open access to scholarly articles, there is a steady, unsettling undercurrent stirred by traditional publishers that could undermine the green route to open access. This article examines data and discourse to better understand publisher perspectives on self-archiving and, based on this understanding, urges action from open access advocates.

This presentation focuses on a global current awareness service designed to meet the knowledge needs of the institution from which it originates. In so doing, it also meets the needs of journalists, researchers, faculty, students, professional practitioners, and policymakers concerned with the same issues globally. It provides the institutional links between partnering institutions that sustain the relationships for the future. This serves as a model for how libraries can become supporting pillars of their organizations by tapping into and meeting KM needs.

Since 2009 Eastern Illinois University (EIU) has hosted the Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy (JCBA), the annual journal of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. The journal compiles the best research, op-eds, and practitioner perspectives on the subject of collective bargaining in higher education, a particularly important subject in the past half-decade of economic constriction, salary stagnation, and pension pressures. In order to better understand new evolving relationships, a review of university press and library collaborations was undertaken by the University of Arizona Press and the University of Arizona Library through the Association of Research Libraries Career Enhancement Program (ARL CEP). During the course of nine weeks, the ARL CEP Fellow reviewed existing literature, interviewed staff at the University of Arizona Press and Library, and conducted 27 informal interviews with library deans, press directors, and scholarly communications leaders. There are a variety of ranking systems for universities throughout the different continents of the world. The majority of the world ranking systems have paid special attention toward evaluation of universities and higher education institutions at the national and international level. This paper tries to study the similarities and status of top Asian universities in the list of top 200 universities by these world ranking systems. Findings show that there are some parallelisms among these international rankings. For example it was found some correlations between QS-Webometrics rankings (R= 0.78); QS-THE rankings (R= 0.53); and Shanghai-HEEACT rankings (R= 0.58). The highest …

The results of the university rankings have been used in strategic planning of research affairs. Focal point behind the university ranking is the methodological issues. Previous university rankings have relied on the conventional methods that are accompanied by some drawbacks. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate Iranian universities based on the Crown indicator. This paper examines the LIS literature pertaining to the serials crisis, evaluating its dominant theoretical perspective. It then explores the problem using the theoretical lens of the Marxist writer Antonio Gramsci in an attempt to obtain a deeper critical understanding of the power dynamics that exist in the arena of scholarly publishing. A program of research is outlined with examples of several issues that could be further explored from a Gramscian perspective.

This study, therefore, examined the perception of academics on availability of information resources for research productivity in federal universities in Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The Multistage sampling technique was used to select 1,057 academic staff members from twelve federal universities in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Research Productivity Of Teaching Faculty Members In Nigerian Federal Universities: An Investigative Study, Olatokunbo C. Okiki

This study assessed the level of research productivity of teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities. The findings of the study show that the research productivity of the teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities is high in journal publications, technical reports, conference papers, working papers, and occasional papers. The research productivity is higher in Northeast (M=22.53; SD=25.73), and Southwest (M=21.74; SD=87.28), and North Central (M=20.69; SD=31.24) Nigeria. Also, the mean score of information resources availability (M=2.41; SD=0.90) indicates that information resources are readily available to teaching faculty members in Nigerian federal universities. The purpose of my sabbatical project was to identify institutions with established digital preservation programs, and investigate how these programs were implemented. To accomplish this task, I conducted a web-based survey that looked into what systems were being used for digital preservation, what services were offered to the campus or user community, staffing and organizational models to support digital preservation programs, as well as the costs associated with these various digital preservation programs. I received a total of 148 responses to the survey. Of the 148 responses, 100 respondents finished the survey. To follow up from the survey, I conducted …

Objective: To develop a librarian liaison role for the Inova Health System’s Nursing Research Councils. In addition, the project aims to establish and improve connections with all nurses conducting research at Inova facilities.

Methods: Through a process of needs assessment, collaboration on research activities, outreach, teaching activities, and promotion this project promoted awareness and usage of library services by members of the nursing research councils. The librarian liaison works directly with each of the six nursing research councils to inform them of the library’s services and resources specific to their needs and goals. Most publishers with self-archiving policies in the SHERPA RoMEO database allow authors to deposit their articles in a repository or post them to a website – supporting the green route to open access. Nevertheless, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) enthusiastically endorsed legislation proposed and defeated twice in the United States to prohibit federal agencies from mandating repository deposits of articles reporting on research they funded. The AAP also endorsed the Finch Report issued in the United Kingdom. The Report denigrated repository deposits and elevated open access publishing – the gold route to open access – as the preferred path …
