Finding and evaluating existing open educational resources (OER) offer particular challenges to faculty and librarians. The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. OER searches tend to include a variety of different learning objects presented in a wide range of formats, which can be difficult to evaluate and compare.

In April 2018, the UC Berkeley Library launched a campus-wide OER publishing platform to provide faculty, staff, and students with a simple and centralized portal for creating and finding OERs and other online works. ResearchGate’s recent legal woes regarding publishing giants like Elsevier and American Chemical Society have caught the attention of academic authors, giving open access champions a unique opportunity to engage with University researchers and scientists. This session will describe a workshop for authors’ rights training that incorporates ResearchGate into discussions of copyright (including the use of SHERPA/RoMEO), licensing and copyright transfer negotiation. The workshop also entails a discussion of the perks of participating in both ResearchGate and non-commercial repositories by exploring how the services complement one another.
