Online Learning In Post-Covid Library Instruction: Creating A Library Skills And Orientation Blackboard Course At The University Of Mississippi, Brooke Gross
The Southeastern Librarian
This paper examines the development process of a library Blackboard course by a Research & Instruction Librarian at the University of Mississippi over the course of one summer. The Library Skills and Orientation course sought to address two issues: limited first-year instruction capabilities and underdeveloped skillsets in upper-level students. It was designed to replace first-year instruction where able and supplement subject-specific instruction where needed. Pursuing new online learning initiatives can be a tough sell, however, when many institutions are attempting to return to normal in-person routines after two years of forced virtual work due to the pandemic. This paper discusses …

Beyond The Books And Lecture Halls: An Amateur Entrepreneur's Oa Ramblings, Aajay Murphy
Beyond The Books And Lecture Halls: An Amateur Entrepreneur's Oa Ramblings, Aajay Murphy
All Things Open
Both academic and entrepreneurial spaces benefit from the use of open resources. This presentation focuses on the latter space, as not every student is going to continue in academia. According to the National Science Foundation's 2012 Science and Engineering Indicators, "less than 17% of new PhDs in science, engineering and health-related fields find tenure-track positions within 3 years after graduation." The numbers are similar across most disciplines. Aajay Murphy prepares students for all potential post-college outcomes in this presentation, not just academia.

Data Sharing Through Open Access Data Repositories, Karin Bennedsen
All Things Open
The National Institutes of Health has expanded their data sharing requirements for obtaining funding to now include all awards for research producing scientific data to accelerate “biomedical research discovery, in part, by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data reuse for future research studies.” The new policy requiring a Data Management & Sharing Plan (DMSP) for all applications goes into effect January 25th, 2023. A DMSP includes where the data will be stored. This lightning talk will review Open Access Data Repositories. Don’t let the task of trying to find data storage hold you …
Lessons Learned On Licensing Presentations From An On-Campus Student Research Symposium, Alexa Hight
Lessons Learned On Licensing Presentations From An On-Campus Student Research Symposium, Alexa Hight
All Things Open
In Spring 2022, a group of faculty and administrators came together to host a pilot Student Research Symposium, and the library was invited to participate in the planning process. The conference proceedings were published via the TAMU-CC Repository. Digital copies of all posters and presentation materials were also added to the Repository. Due to ongoing research and other concerns, in addition to an embargo option, students were given the option to make their work available only to authenticated campus users. Students were also able to choose a Creative Commons License for their work or choose traditional copyright. This led to …
Searching For Oa Scholarly Content, Olga Koz
Searching For Oa Scholarly Content, Olga Koz
All Things Open
Academic search engines have become the number one resource to find scholarly resources. In contrast, search engines of academic databases, like Web of Science and Scopus, harvest research which is locked behind paywalls. Google Scholar and other academic search engines assist in finding open access content as well as the content of commercial databases. Dr. Olga Koz, Senior Research Support Librarian, will present academic search engines that enhance expert research on various academic subject matters.
Georgia’S Libraries And The Needs Of Patrons Experiencing Homelessness: An Exploratory Study, Anne Blood
Georgia’S Libraries And The Needs Of Patrons Experiencing Homelessness: An Exploratory Study, Anne Blood
The Southeastern Librarian
This paper presents a sample survey of Georgia libraries’ services for those experiencing homelessness, conducted in the spring of 2020 before COVID-19 closed libraries across the country. It examines previous research on best practices to aid those experiencing homelessness and former attempts to implement these practices. From these practices and experiences the survey questions were designed. The questions are as follows: what barriers exist, if any, at these libraries that might make it difficult for those experiencing homelessness to use library services; do these libraries follow best practices standards in their services that help all patrons feel welcome using the …

Information Seeking Behavior Of Nursing Faculty During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Lisa Reilly, Irma Singarella
The Southeastern Librarian
Academics Libraries have developed electronic collections to provide continuing services to their patrons especially during research. Databases and other scholarly online resources have become the main support system of many academic libraries. Beginning in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a powerfully disruptive and transformative influence on libraries all over the world and some of the services were altered. The University of Memphis Libraries was not an exception. Meeting the challenges associated with significantly increased need for online content, the University Libraries continued to provide access to scholarly resources and supportive reference and instruction services to the diverse academic communities …
Open Access Publishing Biases Oer, Chelsee Dickson, Christina Holm
Open Access Publishing Biases Oer, Chelsee Dickson, Christina Holm
Open Educational Resource Collection
Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated.
Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention …

Arkansas Related Civil War Holdings At Public Institutions Of Higher Education In The State, David Sesser
The Southeastern Librarian
An examination of a library collection using an existing comprehensive bibliography on a particular subject allows librarians to make collection development decisions. In this study, the collections of each public university in Arkansas is examined for Civil War related titles, compiled from two historiographical articles which appeared in the Arkansas Historical Quarterly. The results indicate that collections in the state contain a wide range of items included in the search. The data gathered in this project may help librarians at these institutions and others in the state determine what items need to be added to their respective collections in order …
