Community Stories And Institutional Stewardship: Digital Curation’S Dual Roles Of Story Creation And Resource Preservation, Sue Kunda, Mark Anderson-Wilk
Community Stories And Institutional Stewardship: Digital Curation’S Dual Roles Of Story Creation And Resource Preservation, Sue Kunda, Mark Anderson-Wilk
Sue Kunda
Our institutions of record are facing a new digital knowledge management challenge: stakeholder communities are now expecting customized Web interfaces to institutional knowledge repositories, online environments where community members can contribute content and see themselves represented, as well as access archived resources. Digital curation can be used to address these knowledge management challenges. Digital curation must involve both digital asset preservation and the important value-added function of facilitating user understanding of and engagement with digital resources. This paper presents a model of digital curation that embraces both the digital preservation challenge and the community engagement challenge.
New Directions In Faculty Work And The Key Role Of The Library, Promita Chatterji
New Directions In Faculty Work And The Key Role Of The Library, Promita Chatterji
Promita Chatterji
Digital scholarship is changing dramatically for faculty, and libraries are under pressure to understand and support their needs as they evolve. In addition to their formal publications, faculty are interested in sharing and managing a wide variety of materials, from datasets to images, audio, technical reports, course materials, syllabi, and more. By understanding the changing nature of faculty needs, libraries can play a key role in supporting this scholarship. In this presentation, Promita Chatterji of the bepress Outreach team discusses major trends in digital scholarship and present a variety of ways to support these new directions.

Undergraduate research initiatives are cropping up at institutions across the country, highlighting the need for undergraduate publication venues. Colleges and universities are finding that publishing undergraduate work not only completes the research cycle for emerging scholars; it also showcases the quality of an institution’s student work to prospective students and their parents, as well as to prospective faculty members.
At Colby College, Suzi Cole, Scholarly Resources & Services, Sciences Librarian, and Martin Kelly, Assistant Director for Digital Collections, collaborate with the Environmental Studies program to publish the Colby Environmental Assessment Team’s projects in Digital Commons @ Colby, in addition to …

Stories And Statistics From Library-Led Publishing, Casey Busher, Irene Kamotsky

Library-led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 MLIS-funded survey found that 55% of respondents—from U.S. academic libraries of all different types and sizes—were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library-led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low- or no-cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library-publishing model: a journal that struggled …
Open Access Repositories, Copyright Laws, And Digital Commons For Graduate Students, Kimberly Sawtelle
Open Access Repositories, Copyright Laws, And Digital Commons For Graduate Students, Kimberly Sawtelle
Kimberly J. Sawtelle
Contributing full-text, peer-reviewed research papers to an Open Access institutional repository, such as DigitalCommons@UMaine, increases the impact of scholarly research by expanding the potential audience far beyond the reach of subscription-based journals. The rapid evolution of Open Access has some scholars playing catch up to learn the ins and outs of negotiating publishing contracts to allow for self-archiving. Open Access Repositories, Copyright Laws, and Digital Commons for Graduate Students is a 26-minute video discussing Open Access, its influence on research impact cycles, and the importance of copyright. The webinar covers topics of interest to both graduate students just entering the …

Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger
Should My Research Be Open Access? Perspectives From Gettysburg Faculty Authors, Janelle Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
Academia is abuzz about open access. The U.S. government has mandated that some federally-funded research be made freely available, faculty at various institutions have been adopting their own OA mandates, and some academic societies and their journals have adopted open access policies. Many Gettysburg College faculty are joining in the conversation—and taking action—by making traditionally-published scholarship available in our open access institutional repository, The Cupola, or publishing directly in open access journals. In this Friday Faculty Luncheon, Dan DeNicola, Darren Glass, and Julia Hendon will discuss their experiences with OA publishing and how it has impacted the reach of their …

Objective: To develop a librarian liaison role for the Inova Health System’s Nursing Research Councils. In addition, the project aims to establish and improve connections with all nurses conducting research at Inova facilities.
Methods: Through a process of needs assessment, collaboration on research activities, outreach, teaching activities, and promotion this project promoted awareness and usage of library services by members of the nursing research councils. The librarian liaison works directly with each of the six nursing research councils to inform them of the library’s services and resources specific to their needs and goals. The project highlights and publicizes existing resources …

Redefining The Library's Role Through An Institutional Repository, Jeanne Pavy, Sharon Mader

Academic libraries are under increasing pressure to demonstrate value to the campus and the larger academic enterprise. An institutional repository can offer a range of unique and valuable services that enhance scholarly communications at the university and beyond, and in the process the library is redefined as a more active partner in the research and publishing mission of higher education. In Spring 2011 the UNO Library implemented ScholarWorks@UNO, an open access repository of the research, scholarship, and creative work of the university. Our presentation focuses on the various factors to consider in creating an institutional repository, including preliminary tasks like …
