Copley Library at the University of San Diego launched the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee in August 2020. The committee was developed in an effort to identify and work through the DEIA-related challenges affecting our country and our local community. Three librarians from the committee endeavored to explore what USD is currently doing as well as how libraries at Catholic-Serving Institutions are providing resources and services in regard to DEIA. The Catholic Portal, a gateway to rare and unique Catholic material, was created by the Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA) in concert with its membership. This essay provides a brief overview of the Catholic Portal, its history, and its value as a research tool. It also introduces the following essays that describe specific contributed collections and explores the potential for the discovery of related resources within the portal.

Intellectual Property, Copyright, And Piracy: A Cultural View, Steven W. Staninger

Religion plays a major role in determining culture, and has an important effect on how laws are both written and enforced. The concept of intellectual property varies in different cultural traditions, and the dominant religion of a culture plays a major role in the how copyright is viewed and if it is respected or enforced. This paper briefly evaluates the cultures of three major religious and intellectual traditions to determine what, if any, effect their beliefs and values have on the respect for and enforcement of laws defending intellectual property and copyright.
