The National Institutes of Health has expanded their data sharing requirements for obtaining funding to now include all awards for research producing scientific data to accelerate “biomedical research discovery, in part, by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data reuse for future research studies.” The new policy requiring a Data Management & Sharing Plan (DMSP) for all applications goes into effect January 25th, 2023. Multiple disciplines are increasingly embracing data science and digital scholarship. However, insufficient training for digital and computational methodologies within subject/departmental silos means that these needs often get overlooked. Opportunities for learning how to teach technical concepts (i.e., how to handle troubleshooting, live participatory coding, etc.) are also rare or non-existent via departmental offerings. Current ontologies, such as DARPA’s OrbitOutlook [5], are not publicly available, complicating efforts for their broad adoption. Most sensor data is siloed in proprietary databases [2] and provided only to authorized users, further complicating efforts to create a holistic view of resident space objects (RSOs) in order to enhance space situational awareness (SSA).

Over the course of two years, a team of librarians and programmers from LSU Libraries migrated the 186 collections of the Louisiana Digital Library from OCLC's CONTENTdm platform over to the open-source Islandora platform.

Early in the process, the team understood the value of creating a reproducible metadata transformation pipeline, because there were so many unknowns at the beginning of the process along with the certainty that mistakes would be made. This presentation will describe how the team used innovative and collaborative tools, such as Trello, Ansible, Vagrant, VirtualBox, git and GitHub to accomplish the task.

The authors consider trends in mobile device usage for the Internet as a whole, for EBSCO Discovery Service across all client libraries, and at two specific libraries: Preston Medical Library, serving the University of Tennessee (UT) Graduate School of Medicine and UT Medical Center, and the Joyner Library at East Carolina University, serving students and faculty on the main campus. Plane Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (MA 16100) is a historically difficult, required course for engineering and science majors. The traditional configuration consists of 250 students meeting in a large lecture 3 times per week and twice per week in smaller recitations of size 40. Additionally, those who repeat the course often continue to encounter difficulty. Interactively engaging students can significantly help them understand key concepts [Hake 1998]. Additionally, students are most likely to recall the first five minutes of a presentation [Burns 1985]. Capitalizing on both of these, we altered the beginning of PHYS 272 (ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS) recitation to include a series of qualitative, “tiered,” iClicker questions that interactively engage students and socratically teach fundamental principals in electricity and magnetism.

The series begin with a question that most students comfortably and correctly answer. Successive questions increase in difficultly and the series stops with most students struggling to identify the correct answer. Along the …

Since 2001, Michele (a library circulation supervisor in her day job) has conducted a summer breeding-bird survey of Grasshopper Sparrows at Camp Johnson in Colchester, VT. Named Grasshopper Sparrows because their breeding call sounds like a grasshopper, this little brown bird is endemic to certain types of scrubby grasslands which are becoming more scarce in the Northeast. The Grasshopper Sparrow is also declining and the species is not on the list of Vermont Endangered Birds. The Increasing Biological Information Sources: Technical Assistance and Support for Delivery and Technology Transfer (IBIS) project was funded by the United States Geological Survey’s National Biological Infrastructure (NBII) to identify relevant data sets in areas of research that served NBII’s stakeholders: environmental decision makers, researchers and scientists including citizen scientists, and teachers and students. The IBIS project also developed biodiversity information tools and services to address the accessibility of USGS provided biodiversity information.

Salary surveys are an important tool for the library community and the administrators and boards responsible for the oversight of libraries. However, such assessments must be constructed and analyzed with great care. The Vermont Library Association Personnel Committee has conducted three salary surveys over the past several years, one focusing on academic libraries and two on public libraries. Significant issues have included confidentiality, participation rate, definitions, length and difficulty of questions, collection of data, and representativeness. Suggestions and lessons learned will be shared.
