Video Creation Tools For Language Learning: Lessons Learned, Vickie Marre Karasic, Anu Vedantham
Vickie M Karasic
Video creation tools—from Skype to PowerPoint to iMovie—have become increasingly popular conduits for foreign language teaching and learning. In flipped-classroom and blended-learning models, video enables faculty to move routine language concepts (i.e., grammar and vocabulary) outside the classroom, leaving more in-class time for live engagement with teacher and classmates. This chapter discusses lessons learned and new data collected at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ Weigle Information Commons on video’s effectiveness in various language learning contexts. Data collected includes reflections on several years of course observations, interviews with language faculty members, and a campus-wide survey to gauge student perspectives on video’s …
Developing A Library Widget For The Campus Lms, Eric A. Kowalik
Developing A Library Widget For The Campus Lms, Eric A. Kowalik
Eric A. Kowalik
In the Summer of 2014 the Raynor Memorial Libraries was given the opportunity to add a library widget to all course homepages in Desire2Learn, Marquette's Learning Management System (LMS).
The widget, developed with HTML, CSS and jQuery, allows students to search the library catalog and link to various library services such as ILL and E-Reserves directly from within a course site.
Recently, Google Analytics has been added to the widget allowing the libraries to analyze usage and student searches by course. Come learn about the development and implementation of this widget.

More Than Just Plain Old Technology Adoption: Understanding Variations In Teachers' Use Of An Online Planning Tool, Heather Leary, Victor R. Lee, Mimi Recker
Heather Leary, Ph.D.
This paper examines variability in teachers’ usage patterns as they interacted with an online teacher support tool, the Curriculum Customization Service (CCS), as part of their professional work. The CCS is a web application that supports teachers in planning, adapting, sequencing, and enacting differentiated instruction in Earth science education. By mining the usage log files of over 40 teachers who used the CCS over a yearlong period, we analyzed for variability using a framework developed in marketing research to characterize appropriation of technology. This analysis helped reveal different kinds of teachers’ patterns along two dimensions: frequency and variability of use. …

Purpose – Many colleges and universities require both undergraduate and graduate students to plan and conduct research as a part of graduation requirements. However, a number of barriers exist for both instructors and students in understanding and conducting research. A small group of, The College at Brockport, instructors who had taught introductory research and research methodology gathered together with librarians as a faculty learning community (FLC) to share information about their instructional methods for teaching research skills. The paper aims to discuss this initiative.
Design/methodology/approach – Following an initiative to foster career-span faculty development, The College at Brockport made a …

Beyond Research: Opencourseware In The Institutional Repository, Heather Leary, Brett Shelton, Marion Jensen
Heather Leary, Ph.D.
Presentation given at the 2009 LITA National Forum in Salt Lake City, Utah on archiving OpenCourseWare in the Institutional Repository. The main function of OpenCourseWare is to provide open access to collections of educational materials used in formal courses. The main function of an Institutional Repository is to collect, preserve, and disseminate intellectual output of an institution. Since OCW is a significant portion of the intellectual output of a university, archiving OCW in an institutions repository seems a perfect marriage of means and opportunity.
A Collaboration Between Digital And Reference: Solutions For Copyright Clearance And Outreach, Heather Leary
A Collaboration Between Digital And Reference: Solutions For Copyright Clearance And Outreach, Heather Leary
Heather Leary, Ph.D.
Two of the biggest challenges institutional repositories face are outreach and copyright clearance. In this webinar, Heather Leary, previously Scholarly Communications and IR Librarian at Utah State University, explores the use of subject librarians for copyright clearance and outreach and discusses the workflow used at Utah State University's Digital Commons repository. The webinar addresses benefits for the repository and subject librarians, the value and sustainability of such a program, and how further relationships can be built between departments. During her tenure managing the repository at Utah State University, Heather Leary helped launch over 70 SelectedWorks pages, organized an IR Day …

Teaching Use Of Digital Primary Sources For K-12 Settings, Anne R. Diekema, Heather Leary, Sheri Haderlie, Cheryl D. Walters
Heather Leary, Ph.D.
This paper describes learning outcomes of a three-day workshop on integrating primary sources into K-12 teaching. The short curriculum — intended for teams of teachers and school librarians — combined visits to a museum and a library's special collections with an introduction to significant national and local digital collections of primary sources. The paper draws on focus group data, reflection papers, and a conference presentation by the workshop participants as well as curricular artifacts presented to the workshop instructors. Using their workshop experience, teachers integrated digitized primary sources into their curricula thereby creating quality instructional content that engaged students' interest. …

In education, the scalable deployment of media-rich online resources supports peer production in ways that promise to radically transform teaching and learning (CRA, 2005; Pea et al., 2008). Online educational repositories such as the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (DLESE.org) and the National Science Digital Library (NSDL.org) collect and curate online learning resources created for a wide range of educational audiences and subject areas (McArthur & Zia, 2008). Through a simple, web-based authoring tool, called the Instructional Architect (IA.usu.edu) teachers locate and share educational resources and activities in an IA project. These IA projects can then be viewed, copied, …

This course is for learning information literacy skills, especially those related to using an academic library and the Internet for college-level research. The course uses a modified problem-based learning approach to give you an authentic and hands-on experience with the subject matter. The purpose of this course is to help you learn about information, the tools that can be used to find, evaluate, and share it, and to practice the skills you have learned.
It is designed for students and teachers in higher education, but can be modified easily for other learners. The course assumes basic Internet capabilities (browser navigation …
