Digital preservation of library materials has increased the need for methods to access the documents and contents maintained in digital archives. The use of altmetrics to quantify the impact of scholarly works, including PlumX, is increasing readership by listing articles in reference services. The outreach from the digital repository ScholarWorks at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) highlights the impact within the natural resources community from Digital Commons, Forest Sciences Commons; and from the Natural Products Chemistry and Pharmacognosy Commons. Digitization and preservation of natural resource documents were reviewed and the current status of digitization presented for a North American university. It is important to present the status of the digitation process for natural resources and to advocate for increased collections of digital material for ease of reference and exchange of information. Digital collections need to include both published documents and ancillary material for research projects and data for future use and interpretation. Since 2001, Michele (a library circulation supervisor in her day job) has conducted a summer breeding-bird survey of Grasshopper Sparrows at Camp Johnson in Colchester, VT. Named Grasshopper Sparrows because their breeding call sounds like a grasshopper, this little brown bird is endemic to certain types of scrubby grasslands which are becoming more scarce in the Northeast. The Grasshopper Sparrow is also declining and the species is not on the list of Vermont Endangered Birds. The need for accurate and timely information does not stop when a student leaves the university. Yet many of the graduates of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (FES), and other similar programs, go on to careers in small or under-funded international organizations, consultant groups, governmental agencies, local governments, or other entities that do not have access to the vast resources provided by university libraries. This article provides some resources to help these early researchers.

The following classification for forestry literature has been prepared by the Faculty of the Yale Forest School for use in its library. It is published to supply the demand for a simple and comprehensive classification that is adapted to any library system. The work was begun about one year ago and included a study of all available data on the subject. A tentative outline was submitted to prominent members of the profession from whom helpful suggestions were received.
