From The City To The Cloud: Charles Williams’S Image Of The City As An Affirmation Of Artificial Intelligence, Michael J. Paulus Jr. Mar 2019

From The City To The Cloud: Charles Williams’S Image Of The City As An Affirmation Of Artificial Intelligence, Michael J. Paulus Jr.

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

A number of Christian intellectuals who lived through the twentieth century had a deep distrust of technological innovation. Charles Williams stands out from among his contemporaries in his affirmation of technology. Jacques Ellul, perhaps the most important critic of the technological society that emerged in the twentieth century, viewed technology as a deformative counter-creation. Williams, however, affirmed technology and technological work as transformative co-creation—as a mean of participating in new creation. This presentation introduces Williams’s apocalyptic view of technology and connects it with current hopes and fears related to artificial intelligence.

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway Jun 2018

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

The Image Of The Library In The Life And Work Of Charles Williams, Michael J. Paulus Jr. Dec 2016

The Image Of The Library In The Life And Work Of Charles Williams, Michael J. Paulus Jr.

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

Charles Williams, the “third” or “oddest” Inkling, was an author and a publisher whose life was significantly shaped by books. But every book he read, wrote, published, or discussed was a compromise—of meaning, form, or craft. Yet each book participated in the hope of redemption and reconciliation through its connections with other books. The way these connections co-inhere suggests an important image for understanding Williams’s books as well as his life: the library.

Focusing on the Masques of Amen House, a trilogy of plays set in the library of the Oxford University Press London office, this paper explores the …

Between Subject And Tech Expertise: Collaborating With Faculty For Digital Humanities Projects [Presentation], Rose Fortier, Heather G. James, Wendy Fall

Heather James

Libraries are well-positioned for partnership with digital humanities efforts in several ways. The management of digital items and the description of information resources for future researchers make libraries natural partners in digital humanities projects. Often Humanities scholars will reach out to the library for support or even guidance in these projects.

At Marquette University, the Gothic Archive exemplifies the development of this collaboration. Though the Archive started as a humble collection of digitized and transcribed gothic chapbooks, it is being developed into an interwoven collection of digitized materials and contextual objects and promises to become a full-fledged digital humanities tool. …

Libraries And The Apocalyptic Imagination, Michael J. Paulus Jr. Jul 2015

Libraries And The Apocalyptic Imagination, Michael J. Paulus Jr.

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

Books and libraries figure prominently in apocalyptic and related forms of literature. The representations of libraries in these imagined, catastrophic futures reveal important roles libraries have had and continue to have in helping individuals, communities, and cultures find ways forward through time. This paper explores the long history of library eschatologies—including ancient apocalypses of the Dead Sea Scroll Library and the book of Revelation, modern apocalypses from Mary Shelley to Margaret Atwood, and the dystopian anti-libraries of Jorge Luis Borges’s Babel and Tlön—and highlights deep continuities connecting our historical memories, future expectations, and present experiences of libraries. In the apocalyptic …

Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier Jul 2015

Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

Cats have become ubiquitous as detectives or detective assistants in twenty-first century mysteries, although the trend began with the “The Cat Who” books, the first of which was published in the nineteen-sixties. Cats have a fine history in the detective genre, but current depictions of cats as detectives include the cats conversing with other animals and even the human detective in the novel. Some of these cats possess supernatural abilities, and even those who don't possess impressive intelligence. Cats are notorious, of course, for being curious, and the librarians who function as amateur sleuths are similar in this regard. Some …

Rare Books In Detective Fiction: Information As Object, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

Library mysteries written since 1970 often depict intrigue surrounding the theft or threatened theft of rare books. Charles Goodrum, a director of the Library of Congress, once wrote that when he decided to write a mystery novel set in a library, he spent an evening coming up with ideas for such a novel. He said that he came up with dozens, but settled on a plot about rare book theft because he thought it would be more accessible to general readers. Many other mystery writers have made the same decision. Although these mysteries are often considered library mysteries and frequently …

The Librarian In Rowling’S Harry Potter Series, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

In her article "The Librarian in Rowling's Harry Potter Series" Mary P. Freier discusses Hermione Granger's skills as a librarian and researcher which lead to the defeat of Lord Voldemort. In each novel in the series, Hermione's research provides the necessary information for the solving of the mystery. Throughout the series, Hermione proves to be the only character who can use books effectively without putting herself or others in danger. Hermione begins the series as a child who loves the library, but does not always know how to use it effectively, while Madam Pince begins the series as a stereotypical …

The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson Mar 2013

The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson

Melanie Mills

Libraries have been moving traditional services to the digital environment for some time now; first, with a measure of reluctance and now with enthusiasm (Anderson 2011, 290). But is the act of migrating library services to online platforms, in and of itself, enough? Have we sufficiently addressed the challenges and fully realized the opportunities that technology affords? Using virtual reference as a case study, we will explore the pedagogical role of academic librarians in higher education. In particular, we will attempt to address the following questions: What can virtual reference teach us about our role as teachers? Is it possible …

'Predicting' The Future Of Library Opac: Assistive Technologies For Everyone, Danielle Lee-Muma Jun 2012

'Predicting' The Future Of Library Opac: Assistive Technologies For Everyone, Danielle Lee-Muma

Danielle K.L. Lee-Muma

Word prediction, unlike the broader area of predictive text which can include T9 language for cellphones without full keyboards, is intended to make typing easier in augmentative and alternative communication for individuals with cognitive and physical impediments (Garay-Vitoria and Abascal 2006, pg 188). While word prediction is intended for AAC, it has potential to alleviate or eliminate the disconnection between library patrons and the Library of Congress Subject Headings used by librarians in cataloguing. Library users often use keywords instead of subject headings because they do not understand the use and syntax of the Library of Congress Subject Headings. By …

Respect Des Fonds D'Archives: Theory And Application, Danielle Lee-Muma Mar 2012

Respect Des Fonds D'Archives: Theory And Application, Danielle Lee-Muma

Danielle K.L. Lee-Muma

This paper examines the principle of Respect des fonds, its history and reason for becoming a dominant principle, and what its aspects mean: interpreting original order as an internal arrangement, and discussing external arrangement in the principle of provenance. Case studies (both real world examples and hypothetical examples based on real fonds and archives) will be used to discuss how the twin principles of respect des fonds, original order and provenance can be put into practice. The case studies are used to discuss what problems can arise in the application of respect des fonds.

Protection, Not Barriers: Using Social Software Policies To Guide And Safeguard Students And Employees, Sarah Steiner, Brian Kooy Oct 2010

Protection, Not Barriers: Using Social Software Policies To Guide And Safeguard Students And Employees, Sarah Steiner, Brian Kooy

Sarah King Steiner

Academic librarians have been using social software and networking sites for public services since they appeared on the Internet. While issues of privacy, identity management, and self-disclosure when using such technologies have been written about, very little critical attention has been paid to establishing policies or guidelines related to their use. This article is based on the authors’ experience creating a social software policy and internal service guidelines at Georgia State University and on the results of an informal survey study that gauged academic librarians’ need for and awareness of such documents. It provides both reasoning and assistance for developing …
