Learn how facilitators use Keller’s ARCS Model of motivation (attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction) to design workshops that are effective at engaging student learning in a co-curricular environment. The Literature and Seminar sequence at James Madison University has been used to develop the chemistry information literacy skills of chemistry majors for over four decades. These courses have been continually updated to emphasize information literacy skills for the twenty-first century. This chapter describes the methods that have been developed to improve chemical, data and general information literacy at a large, public, primarily undergraduate institution. The focus of the first semester course, described in this chapter, is on skill building rather than teaching specific resources. This chapter describes a lesson plan that incorporates information literacy into an introductory chemistry course. The learning outcomes of the activity include becoming familiar with the peer-review process, knowing how to locate original research articles based on “clues” in a general news article, and differentiating between popular and scholarly periodicals. Students work in small groups in a collaborative classroom setting. The activities of the lesson plan are mapped to the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Student2Scholar (S2S) is a fully online and open course that aims to teach academic literacies and research skills to social science graduate students. Set to launch in December 2015, S2S was conceived of and created by a diverse and distributed team of academic librarians, university staff, and graduate students from three Ontario Universities: Western, the University of Toronto, and Queen’s. What if libraries across Oregon shared a repository of how-to instructional videos and tutorials? What if patron questions like, “How do I download an eBook?” could be answered by a slick two-minute video that any library using the same eBook platform could embed at the point-of-need? With an eye towards design thinking, performance support, instructional design, creative collaboration, and technology wrangling, these are the questions that we’ll address in this active discussion. Together, we’ll envision what instructional content could best be shared among Oregon libraries and how point-of-need resources could support library patrons at all different types of libraries.

The Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) works with faculty members on exploring and designing mobile solutions. A communications faculty member contacted our Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) group to explore using a mobile solution for a class activity where students would be able upload images, text, and audio from around the city and display it on a map where others could search and filter the results. Using Google Fusion Tables we were able to setup a method for students to add content, including images, addresses, and details regarding the location that could be filtered and viewed on a Google map. The USF Tampa Library has been creating learning objects to enhance instruction and reference since YouTube came into its own in 2006. Over that period of time, the need for more expertise in creating quality learning objects that can be embedded in course management systems or on the library web site created a shift in priorities and leadership. New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich

Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

The purpose of this paper is to present a virtual library plan created by library directors of the 23 California State University (CSU) system campuses. The information literacy portion of the project offers a repository of high quality interactive digital learning objects (DLOs) in the MERLOT repository. Therefore, DLOs created locally at the Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Library at San José State University (SJSU) focus on topics that supplement the “core” DLO collection.
