Studies by the United States Department of Education have shown that non-traditional students steadily grow within college campuses' enrollment rates. The National Center for Education Statistics defines that "most often age, especially over the age of 24 has been the defining characteristic for this population. The direct impact of social class (Bambe & Tett, 1999; Quinn, 2010), gender and age (Merrill, 2014), and ethnicity (Bron et al., 2014) on the individual academic lives of the students. Libraries are forming strategic partnerships on and off campus - with faculty, research institutes, community organizations, and scholarly associations. Repositories are playing a key role in facilitating these new relationships by enabling libraries to offer new and valuable services to these constituencies. This presentation describes the ways that the Sturgis Library at Kennesaw State University has used both journal and conference publishing services to foster these partnerships.

Technical College System Of Georgia Announces Mergers

The article reports on the merger of the nine colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia into four colleges. The merged colleges are the Chattahoochee Technical College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Southeastern Technical College, and West Georgia Technical College. A noted result of the mergers is the increase in intra-library loans among the colleges. Additional schools are also expected to consolidate in 2010.

Although numerous efforts have been made to enhance the literacy skills of children and youth, recent research clearly demonstrates the continuing need to develop and implement additional imaginative programs which lead to an increase in reading and reading comprehension skills. Whereas public and school media librarians have paved the way towards building successful literacy programs, academic librarians should also participate in literacy outreach programs for children and youth in order to help build these skills and encourage lifelong learning. This article addresses why and how academic librarians can help with the nation’s efforts to combat illiteracy.

Much of the current literature on information literacy on college and university campuses encourages instructional services librarians and departments to pursue one of two options: either integrate information literacy into the curriculum as a campus-wide initiative, or establish a forcredit information literacy course taught by librarians. For a variety of reasons, instructional programs may not be able to accomplish either of these goals immediately. This article first provides an introduction to and summary of Principles of Accreditation accompanied by a detailed list of provisions specifically applicable to libraries in higher education. The provisions and importance of Standards for College Libraries, approved by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in 2000, are summarized and examples of implementation are identified. In a 2003 revision, minimal changes were made to these ACRL standards, which received final approval as the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education in June 2004. These standards now supercede the three ACRL type-of-library standards produced separately for universities, colleges, and community …

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences in thinking styles exist between senior level library administrators working in public and technical service areas in libraries with an institutional membership in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). To facilitate this investigation, the Inquiry Mode Questionnaire (InQ) and a demographic data form were distributed in a nation-wide survey. The study achieved an 80.3% (106) return rate, with a total of 97 surveys used for data analysis. The literature review is organized in three segments: definitional dilemma, theoretical framework, and review of previous research. The definitional dilemma addressed issues concerning …
