What Intellectual Empathy Can Offer Information Literacy Education, Andrea Baer
What Intellectual Empathy Can Offer Information Literacy Education, Andrea Baer
Libraries Scholarship
This chapter explores the roles that affect, social identity and beliefs play in how people engage with information about politically- and emotionally-charged issues and the implications for information literacy education, particularly in politically polarized times. Considering research from cognitive psychology and education, I also suggest ways to move beyond traditional approaches to information literacy that tend to focus on logic and “objectivity” while neglecting the significance of personal beliefs and social identity to information behaviors. I give particular focus to philosopher Maureen Linker’s concept of "intellectual empathy" – “the cognitive-affective elements of thinking about identity and social difference” (Linker, 2014, …
Measuring Person–Job Fit And Career Paths Of Distance Learning Librarians, Jennifer J. Rundels, Anne Marie Casey
Measuring Person–Job Fit And Career Paths Of Distance Learning Librarians, Jennifer J. Rundels, Anne Marie Casey
Publications
While person–job fit has been used to determine satisfaction in many professions, no research has been done among distance learning librarians. This study investigates person–job fit among librarians with primary distance learning responsibility compared to librarians with some distance learning responsibility and examines whether a common career path exists among the two groups. Responses indicate that librarians who work primarily in distance learning perceive a slightly better fit with their positions and the work itself while those with some distance learning responsibility experience a slightly better fit within their library organizations. Career advancement is a common motivator for both groups.

Scholarly Papers and Articles
In 2018, Ithaka S+R began a new research program investigating scholars’ undergraduate teaching practices. As a first foray in this program, we looked at the teaching practices and needs of instructors teaching in business and business related disciplines. The project was undertaken collaboratively with research teams at 14 academic libraries in the United States and we thank those institutions and their researchers for partnering with us.

Internalization Of Multicultural Values In Learning Islamic Education, Triyo Supriyatno, Ubabuddin Ubabuddin
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Education in Indonesia is still reaping problems, including the loss of morality and character that engages students in respecting differences. As a pluralistic nation, respect for diversity is very important to maintain unity and peace. Internalization of multicultural values is carried out as an effort to introduce cultural diversity and appreciate the differences within it. Because the difference is a necessity that must be accepted by anyone. This study aims to determine the multicultural values contained in Islamic religious education learning and planting methods that have been carried out in Learning Islamic Education. Library And Academic Discipline Partnerships: Building A Foundation Of Oer Knowledge In Teacher Education Students, Liz Thompson, Jessica Lantz
Library And Academic Discipline Partnerships: Building A Foundation Of Oer Knowledge In Teacher Education Students, Liz Thompson, Jessica Lantz
Libraries
As libraries support OER across an institution, that support looks different in each discipline. In teaching future educators, building early awareness of Open Education Resources (OER) for preservice teachers creates a foundation for future growth. In a higher ed institution's College of Education, librarians and instructional designers interact with both faculty educators and students that are completing a degree to become PK-12 educators. Libraries can help build OER awareness through in-class instruction, outreach pop-up events, and online resource guides. The Library began this project in an effort to raise awareness of OER concepts before the students begin their professional teaching …

Measuring Digital Literacy Of Students With Visual Impairments, Siska Mardiana, Jenny Ratna Suminar, Dadang Sugiana, Suwatno
Measuring Digital Literacy Of Students With Visual Impairments, Siska Mardiana, Jenny Ratna Suminar, Dadang Sugiana, Suwatno
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Students with visual impairments turned out to be heavy internet user. They had the ability to use digital media such as smartphone and computer. They used it with the help of a screen reader on the device. Changing in communication pattern in blind children also occurs in the educational environment, especially in the learning process that has shifted not only to the use of traditional media and learning method based on printed material, but also to the use of communication technology based on digital media. Therefore, digital literacy is needed by students with visual impairments. Digital literacy is the ability …

Reframing Library Student Employment As A High-Impact Practice: Implications From Case Studies, Erin Rinto, Rosan Mitola, Kate Otto
Reframing Library Student Employment As A High-Impact Practice: Implications From Case Studies, Erin Rinto, Rosan Mitola, Kate Otto
Library Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to discuss how academic libraries can directly contribute to campus student success initiatives through student employment programs. Case studies from the perspectives of two supervisors demonstrate how library student employment programs can intentionally incorporate the characteristics of High-Impact Practices. This paper builds upon a previously published systematic review of the academic library literature on student employment, which found a significant gap in the discussion of employment as a mechanism for learning and retention. This paper aims to address this gap by focusing on practical applications for creating more learner-centered student employment programs.
Beyond Fact-Checking: 5 Things Schools Should Do To Foster News Literacy, Seth Ashley
Beyond Fact-Checking: 5 Things Schools Should Do To Foster News Literacy, Seth Ashley
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
When it comes to news literacy, schools often emphasize fact-checking and hoax-spotting. But as I argue in my new book, schools must go deeper with how they teach the subject if they want to help students thrive in a democratic society.
As a new poll shows that Americans struggle to know if the information they find online is true, news literacy remains essential in student education.
Separating fact from fiction is a vital skill for civic engagement, but students can be good fact-checkers only if they have a broader understanding of how news and information are produced and consumed in …

Identifying Faculty And Peer Interaction Patterns Of First-Year Biology Doctoral Students: A Latent Class Analysis, Soojeong Jeong, Jennifer M. Blaney, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Faculty and peer interactions play a key role in shaping graduate student socialization. Yet, within the literature on graduate student socialization, researchers have primarily focused on understanding the nature and impact of faculty alone, and much less is known about how peer interactions also contribute to graduate student outcomes. Using a national sample of first-year biology doctoral students, this study reveals distinct categories that classify patterns of faculty and peer interaction. Further, we document inequities such that certain groups (e.g., underrepresented minority students) report constrained types of interactions with faculty and peers. Finally, we connect faculty and peer interaction patterns …
