If It Looks Like A *Uck: A Provocation On B*D Words, Jodi Kearns, Brian C. O'Connor
If It Looks Like A *Uck: A Provocation On B*D Words, Jodi Kearns, Brian C. O'Connor
Proceedings from the Document Academy
For some decades, we’ve been considering (and using) “b*d” words. Such a large part of the document space is made up of words; it seems necessary, upon occasion, to explore the crooked little paths and messy gutters occupied by some words. We invite your company on such a little exploration now.
Toward Augmented Document: Expressive Function Of Catalog, Caroline Courbieres, Sabine Roux, Benoît Berthou
Toward Augmented Document: Expressive Function Of Catalog, Caroline Courbieres, Sabine Roux, Benoît Berthou
Proceedings from the Document Academy
A library catalog constitutes a communicational tool which allows access to a collection of documents. It contributes to the circulation of knowledge by signaling and locating informational objects. This referencing consists in deconstructing/reconstructing documents according to principles of standardization: the actualized document is then decomposed into diverse characteristics. With the development of online public access catalog (OPAC), catalogs diffuse their own content beyond the documentary space that they are supposed to represent. Thus the communicational models specific to the bibliographic catalog must be deepened. If a catalog could appear as a documentary showcase, the possibility to comment on documents extends …

Gatekeeping In Crisis Communication: An Exploration Of Leadership In The Press Conference, Carrie A. Boettcher
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Community leaders significantly influence the community's perception of and response to an emergency. This study explored the initial press conferences and communication efforts by community leaders as gatekeepers through an investigation of two large-scale disasters in the United States. Grounded in Patrick Wilson's call to a "reorientation toward the functional" and "to the point of the user," this study explores the initial communication efforts by Mayor Rudolf Giuliani immediately following the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, and by Mayor Ray Nagin in response to landfall of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, …

Being A Scholar In The Digital Era: Transforming Scholarly Practice For The Public Good, Polly Thistlethwaite, Jessie Daniels
Publications and Research
What opportunities do digital technologies present scholars? How do developments in digital media support scholarship and teaching, and how can academics apply them to further social justice activism? The authors, a sociologist and a librarian, examine scholarly practice in the digital era to explore how academics, journalists, and activists can combine efforts to support social justice issues. With scholarly communication undergoing rapid change, and with digital innovation applied in higher education for many reasons, authors outline what scholars can do to channel their work to benefit the public good.

Archives in Action: What Kind of Animal is It
The opportunities to strengthen our relevance and center our value to our campus communities has never been stronger. The rise of digital publishing and scholarly communication as issues in academic librarianship and university life are both lively and multifaceted. There are many faculty and students on our campuses who are publishing in the digital environment, either through the mechanisms of traditional peer-reviewed journals, web publication, and even paper and ink. These university publications, until recently, have existed in most part as fragmented and disconnected coalitions, but with the rise of digital …

Bridging The Communication Gap Successfully For Library/It Projects, Amanda Harlan, Dhanushka Samarakoon
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Have you ever had a difficult time describing a concept for a project? This can be especially true with collaborative projects between library and IT staff. Library and IT staff have historically been at odds concerning communication due to the use of jargon specific to their area, different working environments and styles, and conflicting best practices and standards that each follow. K-State Libraries and their internal IT department will share the communication issues with solutions from a librarian’s and developer’s perspective. We will also discuss how has influenced processes and methodologies used for collaborative projects between library and IT staff …

The Impact Of Analytics Utilization On Team Performance: Comparisons Within And Across The U.S. Professional Sports Leagues, Lee A. Freeman
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Business analytics, defined as the use of data to make better, more relevant, evidence-based business decisions, has received a great deal of attention in practitioner circles. Organizations have adopted business analytics in an effort to improve revenue, product placement, and customer satisfaction. Professional sports teams are no different. While analytics has been used for over 30 years, the use of analytics by professional sports teams is a relatively new concept. However, it is unclear whether the teams that have adopted analytics are seeing any results. If not, then perhaps analytics is not the right solution. Analyses across the four, major …

This report examines the effects and expectations of media in Rwanda today, specifically in reference to the New Times daily newspaper. I spent one month interning with the New Times as a news writer, spending approximately 45 to 50 hours a week with the institution. Within this month, I was able to use both primary research and secondary research to analyze the role of media in Rwanda’s society today. Interviews with head editors of the New Times and conversations with paid journalists from the New Times provided me with much of the information specific to the news outlet, while desk …

The Power Of The Small Press: Entrepreneurial Publishing And Disruption Of The Industry, Rachel Noorda
The Power Of The Small Press: Entrepreneurial Publishing And Disruption Of The Industry, Rachel Noorda
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
Due to the conglomeration of media and publishing companies in the twentieth century (McCleery, 2007), the size of publishing companies has become more polarized, with a majority of small publishers comprising a small percent of revenue and market share compared to the few, but powerful, larger publishing houses (Publishers Association, ‘UK Book Publishing Industry in Statistics’ 2014). In economics, the polarizing principle asserts that ‘developments at one pole of the corporate/cultural spectrum are often counterbalanced by antithetical innovations at the other’ which has, in the publishing industry, led to ‘the emergence of tiny publishing houses’ at the other end of …

Preaching Motherhood And Womanhood From The Christian Pulpit: Information Dissemination And Use, Darin S. Freeburg
Preaching Motherhood And Womanhood From The Christian Pulpit: Information Dissemination And Use, Darin S. Freeburg
Faculty Publications
The sermons clergy preach every Sunday can provide tremendous insight into current religious thinking about motherhood and womanhood. A database of sermons preached by clergy from a sample of Christian churches in the United States was searched for sermons given on Mother's Day 2014. A grounded theory approach explored how clergy framed these constructs. Results show that although clergy tend to frame these concepts in stereotypical ways, there is great complexity in how this is done. Clergy use a variety of information sources to preach on the roles of women and mothers, providing insight into the very construction of these …

Microfilm To Digital For Current Newspaper: Case Study From University Of Oregon, Sheila Rabun
IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session
The University of Oregon (UO) Libraries have been microfilming and preserving Oregon’s newspapers as a public service since the 1950s. However, microfilm production has become increasingly unsustainable due to the rising costs associated with maintaining microfilming equipment and supplies, and researchers increasingly prefer digital access to newspapers as opposed to microfilm access. In order to mitigate costs and meet user needs, the UO Libraries has transitioned from microfilm to digital to provide preservation and access services for current Oregon newspapers. This case study traces the project from start to finish, outlining motivating factors for making the transition, stakeholder communication strategies, …

In 1989 on the shores of Montana’s beautiful Flathead Lake, the owners of the weekly newspaper the Bigfork Eagle started TownNews.com to help community newspapers with developing technology. TownNews.com has since evolved into an integrated digital publishing and content management system used by more than 1600 newspaper, broadcast, magazine, and web-native publications in North America. TownNews.com is now headquartered on the banks of the mighty Mississippi river in Moline Illinois.
Not long ago Marc Wilson, CEO of TownNews.com, noticed that of the 220,000+ e-edition pages posted on behalf of its customers at the beginning of the month, 210,000 were deleted …
